It was a great day in Lansing for Library Advocacy Day, supporting Michigan libraries! Our director, Kathy, met with Senator Paul Wojno’s aide and Representative Ron Robinson and his aide to discuss the importance of strong libraries, funding, and all of the amazing ways they serve residents. Special guest Governor Whitmer also spoke about the role of libraries in literacy, learning, and well-being.

Strong libraries = strong communities. 📚🌟

Today is Michigan Library Advocacy Day—and even if you’re not in Lansing, your voice still matters. Library advocates are meeting with legislators now to support strong, reliable funding, and you can help by contacting your State Senator and Representative to share why libraries matter in your community. A quick email or phone call reinforcing increased State Aid, sustained MeL and MeLCat funding, and protection of penal fine revenue makes a real difference.

Take Action Today:

~Find your legislators: Look up your State Senator and Representative using the Michigan Legislature websites.
~Reach out: Send a brief email or call their office today.
~Share your story: Explain who you are, your connection to your library, and how library services impact your community.
~Include our key requests:
*Increase State Aid to Libraries by $500,000 for FY27 to support local libraries and cooperatives.
*Sustain funding for the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) and MeLCat, by including the $900,000 General Fund investment in the FY27 budget.
*Oppose any diversion of penal fine revenue without a stable replacement for libraries.

Keep your message clear and personal—real examples of how libraries support education, job seekers, families, and communities are powerful.

Happy ! Today we celebrate all the ways libraries serve their communities beyond the walls of the library. From bookmobiles and classroom visits to senior living outreach, festival booths, storytime at the park, and partnerships with local organizations, libraries are always finding ways to connect with people across their communities. 📚🚐🤝

National Library Workers Day (NLWD) is a time for library staff, users, administrators, and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions of library workers. Suburban Library Cooperative extends a BIG thank you to the amazing staff at our member libraries, library workers across Michigan, and beyond.

Librarians, pages, clerks, support staff, IT staff, custodial teams, administrators, directors, Friends groups, and everyone in between are the people who make a difference in our communities every day.

Celebrate by visiting your library and thanking a library worker. 💙📚

Celebrate National Library Week! It’s a great time to stop by your library, help a friend sign up for a library card, attend an event, or explore digital resources online. This year’s theme, “Find Your Joy,” invites people of all backgrounds to discover what sparks joy at the library. Honorary Chair Mychal Threets champions this theme through his uplifting videos about library joy, mental health, and how the library is truly a place for everyone. He also serves as resident librarian for PBS Kids and new host of Reading Rainbow.

Today is also Right to Read Day. Read a challenged book, support your library, and learn about last year’s challenges to intellectual freedom in American Library Association's State of America’s Libraries Report: A Snapshot of 2025: https://bit.ly/3ORpvpE

Say hi to our new Director, Kathy McKinney!
Kathy got her start in libraries at 17 as a page shelving books in 1999. Over the past 27 years, she’s held just about every library role and spent 23 of those years at SLC member libraries, most recently serving as Assistant Director of Mount Clemens Public Library. We’re so excited to have her on the team!

UPDATE: The Polaris upgrade is complete and the system is back online! 🎉

⚠️📚 Plan ahead for Thursday, Feb. 19. Some library services will be temporarily unavailable while we complete scheduled upgrades and bug fixes to Polaris, our library system software.

During this time, you may not be able to search the catalog, place holds, use the SLC app, or access services like Libby/OverDrive, Hoopla, Kanopy, Tutor.com, and some databases. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
