The American Heart Association reports that the national survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is approximately 9.1%.^
Recently, members of our A Shift responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive person at home. Dispatchers quickly recognized the signs of cardiac arrest, immediately updated responding crews, and initiated telephone CPR instructions for bystanders.
Upon arrival, responders from Stephenville Fire Department Medic 1 and Engine 1 confirmed the patient was in cardiac arrest. Crews rapidly began high-quality resuscitation efforts, delivering coordinated, effective care. As a result of their proficiency and teamwork, the patient regained a pulse and was transported by air ambulance for further treatment.
We are grateful to share that the patient made a full recovery and later walked out of the hospital.
While national survival rates remain below 10%, Stephenville’s most recent cardiac arrest survival rate is greater than 40%. This incident marks the third patient treated by the Stephenville Fire Department who has been successfully resuscitated and discharged home in the past year.
Our significantly higher survival rate reflects the department’s commitment to rigorous training, rapid response, and high-quality patient care—the standard our community can expect from the Stephenville Fire Department.
