We would like to recognize our A Shift for a recent cardiac arrest save.

In late February, A Shift responded to a report of a male with breathing difficulties. While EMS was en route, dispatchers continued their protocols, recognizing the patient was in cardiac arrest. Dispatchers then provided CPR instructions to the 911 caller over the phone, beginning life saving interventions before EMS arrival.

Upon EMS arrival, our firefighters got to work quickly, using high quality CPR and advanced cardiac life support protocols to treat the patient. After defibrillating the patient a short time later, a pulse was restored and the patient began breathing on their own. The patient was promptly transported to the hospital where they made a full recovery before being discharged home days later.

We will also be sounding the outdoor warning sirens as part of the statewide emergency alert test.

Local county and city officials have conferred and agreed to postpone the statewide test until 12:00 PM today in order to ensure optimal effectiveness. State officials have been notified of this revised schedule.

Please be advised that this is only a test. In the event of a real emergency, detailed instructions would be provided.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support as we work to keep our community informed of important updates across the county and city.

The American Heart Association reports that the national survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is approximately 9.1%.^

Recently, members of our A Shift responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive person at home. Dispatchers quickly recognized the signs of cardiac arrest, immediately updated responding crews, and initiated telephone CPR instructions for bystanders.

Upon arrival, responders from Stephenville Fire Department Medic 1 and Engine 1 confirmed the patient was in cardiac arrest. Crews rapidly began high-quality resuscitation efforts, delivering coordinated, effective care. As a result of their proficiency and teamwork, the patient regained a pulse and was transported by air ambulance for further treatment.

We are grateful to share that the patient made a full recovery and later walked out of the hospital.

While national survival rates remain below 10%, Stephenville’s most recent cardiac arrest survival rate is greater than 40%. This incident marks the third patient treated by the Stephenville Fire Department who has been successfully resuscitated and discharged home in the past year.

Our significantly higher survival rate reflects the department’s commitment to rigorous training, rapid response, and high-quality patient care—the standard our community can expect from the Stephenville Fire Department.

Thank you to an anonymous citizen for the donation of these animal oxygen masks! We are grateful to have a community that supports our mission and ensures we have the right tools for the job.

These masks will allow our firefighters to specially care for animals that have been exposed to smoke during a fire.
