Selden VFD

Selden VFD The Selden Volunteer Fire Department is a rural fire department located in Erath County, Texas. We do not currently have a water tender.

Our Mission: We are dedicated to protecting life, property, and the environment by providing emergency response in the community of Selden, Texas. Our Vision: We will maintain aggressive, offensive fire fighting tactics. Support a safe and healthy workplace that is open to new innovations. Provide emergency response services and environmental protection. Establish a strong community relations prog

ram, particularly in the area of the fire, and prevention, public education, injury prevention, and emergency preparedness. Our Values: Putting People First with Pride, Honor, and Integrity. Our History
The Selden Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1984 to fill a gap in fire response in southern Erath County, Texas. Prior to our founding any fire response had to come from the City of Stephenville, nearly 10 miles away. Many grass fires were simply not responded to at all, or were put out by local farmers and residents. Following a house fire that destroyed a family home in 1983 a group of residents got together and in 1984 formed the Selden Volunteer Fire Department. The first fire station was a garage behind the Selden Community Center and our only equipment was second hand. Over the years the department has grown to 15 regular members and we have been able to build a larger, 4-bay fire station. Our equipment consists of 1 Structure Fire/Rescue Engine, 2 small brush truck and larger brush engine. We are sustained financially by the generous donations of the surrounding community and the ability to leverage equipment grants. Additionally we receive a small stipend from the county to assist with fuel costs. The Selden Volunteer Fire Department is your local fire department. All of our members live locally, so each and every time we go on a call it is truly neighbors helping neighbors!

EDIT: The fire was revised to 14 acres per TFS.
This afternoon Selden VFD , Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue, Harbin V Fire Department , Hico Volunteer Fire Department as well as several other mutual aid departments from as far away as Colorado converged on the area of Highway 220 and CR 218 for a vegetation fire. Through a coordinated, aggressive fire attack we were able to keep the fire confined to 10 acres. This was a tough one that burned deep into a large mesquite stand, requiring a lot of hand work and hose lines. We had some extra help on this one, a firefighting helicopter and 2 Texas Forest Service bulldozers. Why such a big response for a 10 acre fire? It had the potential to burn several hundred acres with multiple homes it it's path, so we wanted to control it as quickly as possible.

We'll file this one under "watch out for large, slow moving (black) cows on the hwy." Tonight we went to a reported vehicle vs cow šŸ„ on Hwy 67 in front of 3-Way School. Thankfully there were no human injuries, although the car and the cow are a bit worse off. Big thanks to Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue for help with traffic control and clearing the highway so we could get traffic flowing smoothly again.

There is no sign that the weather is going to let up for the next 2 weeks. We've had a couple of small fire starts here in the county, but we've hit them hard with a lot of resources and kept them to a few acres (or less). Thank you for obeying the burn ban and being careful with anything that could spark a fire. We're not out of this yet, but if everyone does their part we can get through it.

There has been a wind shift and smoke from the Ross Fire in Palo Pinto is settling in the area. There are currently no fires burning in our area. If you think you see a fire please don't hesitate to call 911.

Smelling smoke? There are 2 fires burning south of us in Hamilton County making a lot of smoke. Pls call 911 if you are concerned.

This week our fire danger is going to be extreme. But what do all these numbers mean? It breaks down to this: any source of ignition that is introduced to fuel is very likely to catch, take off fast and burn out of control quickly. We're under a burn ban, so please do not do any outdoor burning. More than that- if you are welding there are restrictions that must be followed. (Link in comments) If you're running farm equipment or cutting weeds, be aware of rocks or any other hard objects that could create sparks. Hauling a trailer? Make sure the safety chains are off the ground and not dragging and lastly, avoid stopping or parking on the side of the road- the hot exhaust system under your vehicle can easily ignite a vegetation fire.

Thank you. Yesterday's spaghetti dinner was a great success and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who stopped in for a good meal and the chance for us to meet you! Seriously, we really like to know the folks we serve. Selden is great community and we live here too. We had a few sponsors for this event and they deserve a mention. Scheiber Foods of Stephenville for gift cards and parmesan cheese ,WalMart for gift cards and Thompson’s Custom Meats & Processing for some really good hamburger. And did you try those carmel salted chocolate chip cookies???? Wow, not diet friendly at all! Thank you Maya Johnson! Several pies were dropped off, and trust us-there were no left overs. Lastly, thank you to those who donated money either in person or electronically. Trust that we will be good stewards of all donated funds. Every tank of fuel, each piece of equipment and all of our training is purchased to serve you, our community.

This evening we finished our annual wildland firefighting refresher training. This consists of classroom training on wildland fire terminology, fire behavior, tactics and many other subjects important to successfully and safely fighting vegetation fires. Tonight's training involved maintenance of our wildland equipment, hose and nozzle evolutions and everyones favorite drill- fire shelters. Well, the drill itself isn't so bad, but folding the shelters back up can be a pain in the backside.........
