⚠️ SCAM ALERT ⚠️

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an ongoing telephone scam targeting local citizens.

Several individuals have reported receiving calls from a person claiming to have their daughter, granddaughter, or another family member and demanding money for their safe return. The caller may use threats, urgency, and emotional manipulation to pressure victims into sending money immediately.

In many cases, the suspect is utilizing a spoofed local telephone number to make the call appear legitimate. Do not assume the caller is local simply because the number appears familiar.

If you receive one of these calls:

• Do not provide any personal information.
• Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or electronic payments.
• Hang up immediately.
• Attempt to contact your family member directly using a known phone number.
• Block the suspicious number.

These scams are designed to create panic and prevent victims from verifying the caller's claims. Taking a moment to verify the information can prevent financial loss.

If you have received one of these calls or have information regarding this scam, please contact the Crawford County Sheriff's Office at 573-775-2125.

Please share this information to help protect your friends, family, and neighbors.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office and Steelville Police Department are requesting the public's assistance in locating a missing juvenile from the Bolivar area.

Earlier today, deputies located two of the three missing teenagers from Bolivar. During the encounter, the juveniles fled from law enforcement on foot but were subsequently taken into custody. A third juvenile, a 13-year-old male, was able to evade deputies and remains outstanding.

The juvenile was last seen south of Sanke Road in the Steelville area. Based on available information, we believe he may attempt to make his way back toward the City of Steelville. He was last seen wearing a white hat and a black hoodie.

Residents in the area are asked to please report any sightings immediately. If you see an individual matching this description, please contact Crawford County Dispatch at 573-775-4911 or dial 911. Do not attempt to detain or confront him yourself.

We appreciate the public's assistance as we work to safely locate this juvenile and reunite him with the appropriate authorities.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to stay safe and be responsible as we approach Memorial Day weekend. During this time of remembrance, we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country, and we encourage all residents and visitors to celebrate in a way that ensures the safety of our community.

If you plan on traveling during the holiday weekend, always follow traffic laws, never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and remain aware of your surroundings.

As outdoor activities and travel increase during this time, so do potential driving distractions. Distracted driving includes anything that takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, or your attention away from driving. Distracted driving comes in many forms but cell phone use (texting, talking, and social media use) is the most common distraction.

To help prevent distracted driving, please review the following safety tips:

Activate your phone’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature, silence notifications, or put your phone out of reach.
Appoint your passenger as the “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages.
Do not multitask while driving (adjusting mirrors, selecting music, eating, reading a text or email, etc.) – do it before or after your trip or pull over to a safe location and park your car.
Get plenty of rest before getting behind the wheel and stop for frequent breaks to stretch, eat, etc.
If you are a passenger in a car with a distracted driver, speak up and ask the driver to focus on driving.

Travel safely and enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

Crawford County Sheriff's Office will be joining with statewide law enforcement May 18-31, 2026 for a statewide “Click It or Ticket” mobilization to step up enforcement on Missouri’s seat belt law.

More than 5 out of 10 people killed in 2025 Missouri traffic crashes were unbuckled.

Even with all the advancements in automobile safety, a seat belt remains a person’s single greatest defense in the event of a crash.

Missouri’s seat belt use has shown improvement in the last five years, but the state remains just below the national average in usage. Missouri has an 88.5 percent seat belt use while the national average is 91.2 (2024) percent. Teens and pick-up truck drivers are among those least likely to buckle up at 74.0 percent and 75.3 percent, respectively.

“Nearly every day someone dies in a Missouri traffic crash because they weren’t buckled up,” said Major Adam Carnal. “We will be pulling out all the stops to help ensure motorists are making the smart decision to buckle up.”

Buckle Up and Arrive Alive. For information on Missouri seatbelt usage, visit www.saveMOlives.com.

During National Police Week 2026, CCSO proudly recognizes and honors the courageous men and women of law enforcement who serve our communities with integrity, professionalism, and sacrifice each and every day.

This week serves as a reminder of the commitment made by officers across the nation to protect and serve, often under difficult and dangerous circumstances. We especially remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and the families they left behind.

To all current and retired law enforcement officers, we thank you for your dedication, resilience, and unwavering service to the communities you protect.

Please join us in showing appreciation for the men and women behind the badge this National Police Week.

This week we would also like to honor our own Deputy William Hibler of the Crawford County Sheriff's Office who was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call on February 12, 1934. Deputy Hibler accompanied a man's estranged wife to her home to gather her belongings. The husband met them both with a rifle. Deputy Hibler was shot during a scuffle with the man when he tried to disarm him. The suspect was arrested and later convicted of Deputy Hibler's murder. Deputy Hibler along with nearly 25,000 other law enforcement officers grace the walls of the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. after making the ultimate sacrifice for their communities.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office salutes the service of law enforcement officers in our community and in communities across the nation.
