A Message to the Citizens of Steelton Borough: Airsoft Gunz, Orbeez Guns and others

As we continue through the summer months, the Steelton Borough Police Department is asking parents and guardians to carefully consider the types of items being placed in the hands of children and juveniles.

While Airsoft guns, BB guns, Orbeez guns, and similar devices are often marketed and sold for recreational purposes, we are increasingly encountering situations in which these items are being used to target other individuals. These incidents are not harmless pranks. They create fear, provoke confrontations, and significantly increase the potential for tragic outcomes.

The reality is that predictable behavior leads to predictable outcomes. When juveniles are provided with imitation fi****ms without appropriate supervision and accountability, misuse becomes increasingly likely. Fortunately, predictable behavior can also be prevented. Through parental involvement, clear expectations, and timely intervention, many of these incidents can be avoided before they result in injury, criminal charges, or irreversible consequences.

Many of these devices closely resemble actual fi****ms. In a rapidly evolving situation, neither members of the public nor responding police officers may be able to immediately distinguish a toy or imitation weapon from a real one. The consequences of such a misunderstanding can be devastating.

Already this summer, the Steelton Borough Police Department has confiscated several of these guns and charged juveniles with both summary and misdemeanor offenses as a result of their misuse. Parents should understand that they may also be held accountable for the actions of their children.

We encourage parents and guardians to have conversations with their children regarding the responsible use of these items and to ensure they are not being used to harass, intimidate, or endanger others. What may begin as a game can quickly escalate into a situation with life-altering consequences.

The safety of our community is a shared responsibility. By addressing these issues proactively, we can prevent predictable behavior from producing predictable tragedies.

Together, we can ensure that everyone enjoys a safe and peaceful summer.
