Congratulations on the newest member of the Borough Council!! Jazmin Slaughter was unanimously selected by borough council to replace the outgoing Natashia Ross , who was appointed Mayor last month. The council interviewed candidates for the role at tonight’s meeting. Thanks to all the candidates who interviewed and continue to support the Borough of Steelton.

🎉The official groundbreaking of Steelton’s newest recreational area and asset will continue a tradition of providing green space in the borough.

🪏Yesterday, the park’s namesake did the official opening of the park’s construction with a ribbon cutting and ceremonial shovel of the dirt. 🪏

A special thanks to State Representative Dave Madsen who attended and along with Mayor Ross, provided proclamations to Mr. Powell.

Emuel Powell Jr., at Brickyard Park, located in the center of the borough town center, behind the Steelworks complex, promise to be the borough’s next gathering place for residents and guest. With walking trails, benches and open space, the borough leadership sees it as a nexus to more economic development. Steelton is on the move!!🪏

🏛️In Pennsylvania, borough council vacancies are filled by appointment. The Borough of Steelton seats 7 council members. Natashia Ross resigned her council seat on August 20, 2026, to accept the position as Mayor. There is now a vacancy.

*THE BOROUGH OF STEELTON IS SEEKING A NEW COUNCIL PERSON*

If an elected official resigns or vacates their seat, the Borough Council has 30 days to appoint a qualified, registered voter to fill the remainder of the term.

To be considered for a borough council vacancy in Pennsylvania, you generally must meet these criteria:

✔️Resident: Live in the borough for at least one year prior to your appointment.

✔️Voter: Be a registered voter in the borough.

✔️Age: Be at least 18 years old.

A Pennsylvania borough council is the primary elected legislative body responsible for the management, control, and governance of a borough.

Under the Pennsylvania Borough Code, the council holds the legislative, executive, and administrative powers to enact local laws, adopt budgets, levy taxes, and oversee essential community services.

*Key Responsibilities are:

♦️Laws and Ordinances: Council members create, revise, and enforce local rules that protect the health, safety, and welfare of residents (e.g., zoning, traffic laws, and noise controls).

♦️Budget and Finance: Council determines how municipal funds are spent, sets the annual budget, and levies local taxes (such as real estate or earned income taxes) to pay for services.

♦️Public Services: Council oversees public works, trash collection, parks, and other community services.

♦️Hiring Personnel: Council is responsible for hiring professional borough staff, including the Borough Manager, police officers, and the Borough Solicitor, as well as set compensation.

🎉A special congratulations to newly sworn in Mayor Natashia Ross. The swearing in was held tonight in Council Chambers, with the Honorable Judge La Tasha C. Williams officiating.

🏛️The Steelton Borough Council unanimously selected Natashia Ross in a vote last night to fill the vacant seat held by Ciera Dent, who resigned on August 17th.

Community engagement was strong as nine prominent Steelton residents expressed interest and most interviewed in the special council session held on August 19th. The Borough Council wishes to thank you for your interest in wanting to see Steelton thrive ♥️

The Borough of Steelton cordially invites the community to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for its newest park and recreation asset, to be located in Town Center.

This facility is dedicated in honor of community leader Emuel Powell, Jr., in recognition of his contributions to the Borough of Steelton.

⏳Time: 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

📍Location: Brickyard Park, Steelton, PA (behind Hamilton Health Center at Steelworks) 100 block of North Front Street.

*Steelton’s Department of Public Works is on the Move.*

🎉Congratulations to our newly hired Director of Public Works, Jason Bryant. Director Bryant comes to Steelton from Swatara Township and is a strong community leader through his well-known support of local youth in the region.

♦️He will oversee the borough’s seven parks and boat launch, highway operations of 109 streets, totaling 17.74 miles of maintenance including street sweeping, lighting, snow removal and street repairs.

♦️Director Bryant will also oversee the Borough’s sewer utility, including daily maintenance of pump stations, and the near completion of the Hoffer Street Pump Station, the sewer system, inlet repairs and clean outs.

♦️Director Bryant is a native of Steelton, and brings tremendous insight on the community and its needs in Public Works. He is a graduate of the Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

🎉A special congratulations goes to Anias Foster and Richard Bekelja, who were promoted to Assistant Foreman at the July 20th meeting by borough council.

♦️Foster brings more than three years of experience working as a Highway Operator in the Borough, and guides the Highway Division team by demonstrating his professional work ethic daily.

♦️Bekelja brings nearly four years experience in the Department of Public Works, and will lead the borough’s Sewer Division that includes maintenance operations and pump station management around the borough.
