Description:
This is a full-time, exempt position as a Staff Engineer with the Mile High Flood District (MHFD). This position performs a variety of professional functions that support all district services. This position includes contact with consulting engineers, contractors, the public and other parties involved in the support and use of the products, reports, and technologies developed by MHFD.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Reviews development referrals from local communities within the District including zoning requests, preliminary and final drainage reports
• Provides technical review of supporting documentation (hydraulic analysis, reports, plans, profiles, and other products) for Flood Hazard Area Delineation studies
• Reviews and approves proposed plans for construction to ensure compliance with MHFD criteria and for feasibility of construction
• Provides technical review of hydrologic models, reports, figures, and other documents for watershed planning studies and flood risk mapping efforts
• Assists in special projects and educational outreach efforts that support MHFD’s mission, vision, and core values
• Supports internal and external research efforts to advance hydrologic assesments, stormwater quality practices, technical standards, and permit compliance
• Develops, maintains, and improves software tools, databases, details and specifications, and other technical products to support various MHFD services and activities
• Prepares pay estimates and invoices for MHFD construction and maintenance projects
• Assists Project Managers in the administration of construction contracts, including the bidding and
award process
• Assists Floodplain Manager in the administration of Letters of Map Change
• Assists with operation and maintenance of the early flood detection network and related systems.
• Assists with implementation of UDFCD’s flood emergency plan, flood documentation activities, and
flood warning services
• Provide leadership and mentorship of student interns, including training, assigning tasks, monitoring
progress and quality of deliverables, and conducting annual performance reviews
• Assists with outreach efforts to local governments and the floodplain community to promote the responsible use of District criteria and software
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or another relevant branch of engineering
• Three (3) years’ experience in responsible engineering work with a consulting engineering firm,
construction firm, or public agency, preferably with experience in construction management
Key Competencies:
• Knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, drainage and floodplain management concepts
• Working knowledge of the technical and practical aspects of engineering design and construction
• Ability to apply such knowledge and concepts to specific problems
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated interest and ability in maintaining technical proficiency
