After several months of collaborative planning, the Slate Creek Steering Committee will meet June 17 & 18 to complete its initial phase of work and establish a framework for future decision-making related to the Slate Creek Neighborhood. Representatives from the City of Steamboat Springs, Routt County, and the Yampa Valley Housing Authority will finalize guiding principles, a decision-making framework, communications and community engagement priorities, and a roadmap for the next phase of planning.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at Vectra Bank (270 Anglers Dr.) on June 17 from 1โ€“4 PM and June 18 from 9AM-12PM. Virtual attendance is available, and post-meeting recordings will be shared. Learn more, access Zoom login information, and view meeting materials here:

Lauren H. is one of the newest homeowners moving into the Cottonwoods (with her sidekick, Penelope) who plays quite an active role in the Steamboat Springs community. She currently serves as the Development Director for Better Tomorrow , a nonprofit whose mission is to serve vulnerable + marginalized individuals in the Yampa Valley and empower them to live thriving lives. โ€œI came here in 2019 with the intention for it to be a brief stint โ€“ but the Yampa Valley Curse got me,โ€ says Lauren. โ€œI love that itโ€™s a close-knit community. You can really go anywhere and make friends.โ€

As a first-time homebuyer, Lauren was no stranger to the stress of unaffordability that has come to accompany life in the Valley. โ€œMy best friend is leaving Steamboat for better-paying work in Denver. I see this a lot amongst people in my age group โ€“ they canโ€™t find jobs that pay enough to live here,โ€ she says. Having lived at Alpenglow prior (a YVHA partnership property focused on affordability for the local workforce) allowed Lauren to save up for an eventual down payment on her new Cottonwoods condo.

Lauren touts the local vibe as her favorite thing about Cottonwoods living so far. โ€œIt feels like a real community,โ€ she says. โ€œIโ€™ve met a bunch of neighbors, and we all have some commonalities and shared aspects to our life stories. It does feel good to have a little slice of Steamboat that is finally ours.โ€

This week, City of Steamboat Springs - Government staff presented a municipal service analysis that outlines the city's current capacity to absorb potential new development in the Slate Creek Neighborhood without major infrastructure upgrades. It is important to note that this analysis will help to inform the decision-making process moving forward - and is not a "be-all and end-all".

From the full analysis: "this document is not intended to establish a fixed buildout limit or serve as a longโ€‘term growth forecast. Rather, it provides Council with a current snapshot of municipal service capacity and identifies the points at which additional investment, staffing, or infrastructure upgrades may be needed to maintain existing service levels."

The is so grateful to all of our partners and supporters who came out today and cheered for affordable home ownership opportunities in the Yampa Valley ๐ŸฅนโœŠ The Cottonwoods are officially "open", in the grandest sense! ๐ŸŽ€โœ‚๏ธ

The timing is appropriate - new homeowners were in the midst of moving boxes into their units while the ribbon cutting ceremony took place. It all contributed to a vibe of celebration and accomplishment. It takes a village, and we are so excited to see this valuable progress recognized and rooted for. Let's keep this momentum going!

๐Ÿšจ Heads up - Section 8 Rental Assistance PRE-application/waitlist opens THIS WEEK ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿ‘ฅ WHO should submit a pre-application? Low-income families, elderly persons, veterans or disabled individuals who need assistance to offset the cost of housing on the private market.

๐Ÿ’ฐ WHAT does this program provide? Program participants, if selected, can choose any eligible housing unit and have rent partially covered by subsidies paid directly to their landlord.

๐Ÿงพ HOW does one apply? First note that the pre-application period will open this Wednesday through Friday, the 20th-22nd, and this will allow you to join the WAIT LIST if eligible. Click the link below๐Ÿ”— for further information and to access a list of pre-application documents needed.
