North Cascade has some important dates coming up in the next couple weeks! This Friday, May 15th, we will be opening up Santiam Horse Camp for the season! You can get your reservations in at https://oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/santiam-horse-camp/r/facilityDetails.do?contractCode=OR&parkId=411802

Friday, May 22nd, will be the last day the district will be issuing woodcutting permits. The permits are $20 for 2 cords of wood and good for 3 weeks. You can pick one up at your local unit office.

This is an Oregon Department of Forestry operated campground. In 2006 the Oregon Department of Forestry partnered with the Silver Falls Chapter of Oregon Equestrian Trails and other local volunteers to design and construct this campground and the trail system surrounding it.

The major rainstorm that rolled through last December caused serious damage to some of our roadways in the Santiam State Forest. These pictures show the road to the Rock Creek Campground washed out, making it impassable. Our decision is to close the road, and close Rock Creek Campground for the 2026 season. An interim fix has been completed on this segment of road to at least stabilize the area for the rest of Spring. A final fix is in the planning and preparation process and will be completed during the in-water work period this summer. This wasn’t an easy decision to make but we appreciate everyone’s cooperation while we do what we can to stabilize the road.

01/21/2026

Due to ongoing dry conditions, no slash burning is permitted through the end of this week. The district has not received any significant precipitation since early January. Combined with low relative humidity, these conditions increase the risk of escaped fires.
We are monitoring the situation closely and will reopen slash burning when conditions improve. The District in the past has had significant fires during these cold snaps with East winds.
If you have any questions, please contact your local ODF office:
Molalla Area: 503-829-2216
Santiam Area: 503-859-2151
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our communities safe.

01/16/2026

Due to extended dry conditions and forecasted east winds the North Cascade District will be suspending all slash burning through the long weekend. If you have conducted burning within the past several weeks, please remember to check your burn piles and ensure they are secure and that appropriate precautions are in place. Before resuming any activities, contact your local Oregon Department of Forestry office on Tuesday to receive current burning instructions and authorization. Thank you for your cooperation in helping reduce wildfire risk.

North Rock Creek 100 Road Closed due to landslide.

Gates, OR – The North Cascade District’s Santiam Unit Office has closed NRC100 road to vehicle access until further notice due to severe erosion caused by high rainfall totals and heavy stream flows in Rock Creek, making the road unsafe for all vehicle traffic.

Public safety is our top priority, and we urge all Oregonians to avoid the area until further notice. District staff are currently conducting initial assessments and working with Oregon Department of Forestry staff on next steps. Currently, there is no threat to public safety or residential houses within the vicinity.

As the District gathers more information, we will provide updates on the closure and expected re-opening on this page. We thank you for understanding and cooperation at this time.

If you have any questions, please contact the North Cascade District’s Santiam Office at 503-859-2151
