This month, we were proud to celebrate employees reaching 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30+ years of service to Staunton City Schools. 🎉

Pictured here are some of our longest-serving educators of 30 or more years, whose decades of dedication have helped shape generations of students and strengthen our learning community.

They were honored by the School Board earlier this month for their EXTRAORDINARY commitment to SCS.

Some have even experienced a full-circle moment: teaching students who later returned to SCS as educators themselves. That's more than a career; that's a LEGACY! ✨

Every year of service matters. Employees who choose to build their careers in our schools bring invaluable experience, relationships and institutional knowledge that help students thrive year after year.

THANK YOU for the difference you make and for choosing to make Staunton City Schools your home!

On this , we want to share a moment of genuine KINDNESS on the court. 🏀

Earlier this month, the entire Shelburne Middle School Boys Basketball Team was recognized with a Kindness Matters award for an act that reminded us of what it means to be selfless.

As shared in an administrator's nomination:

"During the last game of the year, the SMS Boys Basketball team was determined to get ahead by several points in order to make sure that all players got to play, including the team manager (pictured first on the left in the front row). Towards the end of the game, both Wilson and SMS basketball teams worked to make sure that the team manager not only got on the court, but that he scored while in the game. This was a transformative moment for students and staff at both SMS and Wilson. I am so proud to be a part of a HERD where they put kindness above all else."

Moments like these remind us that the most meaningful victories aren't always reflected on the scoreboard. We're proud of both teams for demonstrating teamwork, inclusion and kindness! 🙌

As we close out Get Caught Reading Month, we highlight Bessie Weller librarian Courtney Janovsky’s best recommendations!

Her library is a place for every student to find a home, from the hand-cut art mural of 3,000 dots on the walls to blending literacy education with the beloved school garden just outside the library windows.

"Our school library is a place for everyone,” she said. “There is something within these walls for every student and staff member, even if they don't know what they're looking for yet."

Mrs. Janovsky’s job is student-driven in every sense: the books she highlights, the lessons she designs, and the conversations she starts are all shaped by what students are curious about, excited by and working through.

Her summer reading recommendations? Adaptations. Classics reimagined as graphic novels, nonfiction tied to favorite movies and TV shows, and chapter books retold in picture book format, such as:

📖 The Hobbit: A Graphic Novel
📖 Bluey and Bingo's Fancy Restaurant Cookbook: Yummy Recipes, for Real Life
📖 The Wild Robot on the Island: An Illustrated Picture Book

Happy reading!

Shelburne Middle School students in the Start It! business class recently wrapped up running their own restaurant businesses, serving food and drinks to teachers and staff earlier this month.

Students operated businesses including Pretty Picks, Fry Fever, Flavor Fusion, and Pop Paradise, gaining real-world experience in everything from marketing and purchasing to production and customer service. A special thank-you to Mrs. Mooneyham and Mrs. Sanders for leading such a creative and engaging opportunity for our students!
