The Statesville Fire Department is offering a new, free Rescue Alert window cling that can provide firefighters with helpful information during an emergency. The cling allows residents to indicate whether someone in the home may need additional assistance, including a:
๐นChild
๐นPet
๐นOlder adult
๐นPerson with a disability
The idea developed from conversations with community members who remembered the former โTot Finderโ stickers and asked whether something similar was still available. Those conversations led the Fire Department to create a more inclusive version that could be used by a wider range of households.
โDuring an emergency, every piece of information can help,โ said Heather Gessler, Fire & Life Safety Educator with the Statesville Fire Department. โThis cling gives residents a simple way to let firefighters know that a child, older adult, person with a disability or pet may be inside and need assistance.โ Residents should mark all applicable boxes and place the cling near the bottom of the glass on a front or side door where it may be visible to responding firefighters. Clings should be updated or removed when the information no longer applies.
The Rescue Alert cling provides firefighters with additional information, but residents should not rely on it as the only way to communicate during an emergency. Always call 911 first. Once safely outside, immediately tell dispatchers and arriving firefighters if someone or a pet may still be inside and where
they were last seen. Never re-enter a burning home.
Free Rescue Alert window clings are available at Statesville Fire Station 1 (822 Fifth St).
