Statesboro Fire Station #3 is officially open! 🚒

The City of Statesboro celebrated the ribbon-cutting for the Fire Department's newest station yesterday at 983 Brannen Street, the department's first new station in over 20 years.

The $4.8 million project was funded through voter-approved SPLOST revenue — $1.1 million directly, plus a $3.7 million loan from the Georgia Municipal Association to be repaid through future SPLOST proceeds, not property taxes.

The department also welcomed a new quint truck into service with a traditional "push-in" ceremony, a custom dating back to when engines had to be physically pushed into the station after every call.

During the ribbon-cutting, the city recognized Robbie Franklin, who previously owned the 1.3-acre station site and has long served Statesboro as a businessman and former council member. The road adjacent to the station is now officially named "Robbie Franklin Way."

The City of Statesboro has tentatively adopted a millage rate that will require an increase in property taxes by 33.98 percent. The final public hearing for the proposed tax increase will be held September 15, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 9.600 mills, an increase of 2.435 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 7.165 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $255,000 is approximately $243.50 and the proposed tax increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $375,000 is approximately $365.25.

💧The Statesboro Water Department will be conducting fire hydrant testing from Sunday, September 13th through Friday, September 18th, between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. During hydrant testing, city water customers in the testing area may experience low water pressure or water discoloration in their homes or buildings.

Affected areas:
- Zetterower Rd from N Main St to Hwy 80
- Westlake Drive
- Duke Road
- Lanier Road
- Jef Road

❓What to do if you have discolored water? You should start by flushing your cold water lines. It is recommended to start flushing your water lines with an outside water spigot if you have one or a faucet without a screen. Run the water until clear or for about 15 minutes, then move into the lowest floors in your home or business, turning on each faucet one at a time until the water is clear, then move to the upper floors and repeat the process. You should also flush your refrigerator's water lines. It is also recommended not to use discolored water to do laundry because your clothes can become stained.

25 Years. Many of us remember what we were doing that day when we heard the news. Some have only learned about it in history class. May we never forget the sacrifices, bravery, and unity that carried our nation through September 11, 2001, and the weeks and months after.

The City of Statesboro wishes everyone a safe and happy Labor Day! We would also like to recognize and thank each of our employees for their unwavering dedication and service to the residents of Statesboro.

🏛️City Hall and all other city buildings are closed to the public today in observance of Labor Day. The Statesboro Police and Fire Department's administrative offices will be closed, but the departments are staffed to provide patrol and emergency services.

🚌 Statesboro Area Transit buses will not run today and will resume service on Tuesday.

All citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase, which will be held at City Hall Council Chambers, 50 East Main Street, on September 8, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and September 15, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
