Mayor Jonathan McCollar has ordered the flags at City Hall to be lowered to half staff through Friday in honor of Attorney Kelley Kidd, a dedicated public defender in the Bulloch County Public Defender's Office of the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit and a tireless servant to our community, who passed away on June 14, 2026, at the age of 83.

"The City of Statesboro joins our community in mourning the passing of Attorney Kelley Kidd. Kelley was a man of deep conviction, a heart for justice, and an unwavering belief in redemption. He dedicated his life to serving others and reminding us that people are more than their worst mistakes. His impact on our community will be felt for generations to come. At tonight’s City Council meeting, City Manager Charles Penny announced that Captain Jared Akins has been named Interim Police Chief, effective July 1. Captain Akins brings 25 years of local law enforcement experience to the position, having served as SPD’s Operations Bureau Captain since 2019 and previously as Chief Deputy for the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office.

Statesboro Area Transit will suspend services on Friday, June 19th, for the Juneteenth holiday and will resume normal operations on Monday, June 22nd .

SAT buses run Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Fare rates start at just $1 for a one-way trip and $2 for a round trip. Discounted rates are available for seniors, college students, and individuals with disabilities. To learn more, visit www.statesboroga.gov/sat

To find his successor, the city is partnering with Developmental Associates, the same executive search firm that was used to hire Chief Broadhead in 2017. Feedback gathered at this interactive session will directly shape the ideal candidate profile and guide the selection process.
