"With all the legalism that's involved in Medicaid policy or housing policy or education policies—who created this? Because nobody with a disability could have created this."

We've gotten some great feedback to the first installment of the Disability Story Project, which you can read bi-weekly by signing up for our newsletter.

"When we travel, disabled people are navigating a system that just wasn’t built for us. Airlines must do better to accommodate disabled people because mobility aids, which are often custom and cost thousands of dollars, are crucial to disabled people and essentially function as an extension of our bodies by being central to our independence. The stakes of this issue are dire." - Tory Cross, Associate Director of Federal Policy at Caring Across Generations

This isn’t new.

The disabled and chronically ill community has been talking about what individualism would cause.

“COVID is surging again.”

COVID has never gone away.

Society and government just chose to ignore it.

The disabled and chronically ill community warned that doing that would lead to more surges.]

It’s so incredibly important that people with disabilities have access to the same resources as their non-disabled counterparts, and having a program that provides those resources while not adding extra financial or transportation burden is big!
Would love to see more county libraries implement programs like this!

YDG Disability Caucus Vice Chair

Cobb libraries have a new way to serve home-bound residents — by delivering books in the mail. The new free service is for residents who experience physical disabilities, have a long-term illness, or lack transportation. The library will send up to four items for a 9-week checkout period. Items can be books, CDs, and DVDs. The library provides a pre-paid return so there is no cost to the recipient.

For more information and to apply for the Books By Mail service, go to cobbcat.org/booksbymail or call 770-528-2343.

In the U.S., we have what's called institutional bias, despite the promise of the 1999 Olmstead decision which set a standard that would guarantee in-home care for disabled people.

Insitutional bias is one of many reasons why the ADA wasn't enough—and why there's so much more work to be done.

Nothing about us without us y’all

All month we're emphasizing that the ADA is the floor, not the ceiling. Today we'd like to share a thought from Jessica Johnson, who has Cerebral Palsy. Jessica, from Virginia, says it best: The care system in place for disabled people could never have been created by a disabled person. This system needs reform now.
