"Today, a borough-wide outreach initiative is being conducted across all precincts, with a focus on educating residents about jewelry swap thefts and other common scams, including credit card theft and bank-related fraud.

Residents are reminded that suspects may approach in a friendly manner, ask for directions, offer a gift, say “God bless you,” or attempt to get physically close or place jewelry around their neck while distracting them and removing their valuables.

Protect yourself by keeping valuable jewelry covered, maintaining your personal space, and never allowing a stranger to touch you or place jewelry on you.

If an incident occurs, try to remember the suspect’s description, vehicle and license plate, and direction of travel.

If you believe you are a victim, call 911 immediately.

Stay alert. Stay informed. Stay safe"

Today, our Crime Prevention Officer visited four local older adult centers: the New Dorp, Arrochar, Great Kills, and Todt Hill Friendship Clubs. Pedestrian safety is our priority, always look for ways to reduce your risk of a collision in the crosswalk or parking lot. ⬇️

🏃 Before crossing, watch for turning vehicles. Don’t assume drivers can see you.

🛒 When walking in shopping plazas be alert of vehicles who are revering or turning into a parking space.

🚘 If driving, expect pedestrians to be in the crosswalk every time and turn slowly.

📱 Distracted driving is dangerous driving. Put down any and all portable electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle.

⚠️ Although back up cameras and sensors are great use of technology, before putting the vehicle in reverse or drive make a 360-degree visual observance to clear blind spots.
