At the center of our Voices Of 1776 social media series is the Peace Conference itself, the meeting that brought Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Edward Rutledge, and Admiral Lord Howe together at the Conference House on Staten Island.

On September 11, 1776, the delegates met for several hours in one final attempt to negotiate peace between Great Britain and the Continental Congress. Howe offered pardons and peace, but only if the colonies gave up independence.

The meeting took place just weeks after the Declaration of Independence was adopted and only days after the British victory at the Battle of Long Island. While the war continued around New York Harbor, the delegates debated whether any path toward reconciliation still remained. No agreement was reached. The conference ended without a settlement, and the war continued for years afterward.

Holiday Weekend Update! The Conference House will be closed for tours this Saturday, September 5th, and Sunday, September 6th, in observance of Labor Day. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable long weekend.

250 years ago this September Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge sat in a house on Staten Island and tried to stop the American Revolution.

The Conference House. Tottenville, Staten Island. September 11, 1776. The only peace conference of the entire Revolutionary War happened right here at the southernmost point of New York State. The British demanded the colonies abandon their Declaration of Independence. The Americans refused. They walked out. The war continued for seven more years.

Saturday, September 12th the Conference House is hosting a 250th Anniversary 1776 Peace Conference Celebration.

Staten Island Bagpipers open at 11am. Colonial open hearth cooking demonstrations. 18th century crafts and trade demos, print shop, tin smith, woodworking, blacksmith, quilters. Children’s activities. Colonial dancing. Outdoor museum display. And at 2pm a live re-enactment of the 1776 Peace Conference with actors playing Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Edward Rutledge and Admiral Lord Howe.

Special performance by the Staten Island Philharmonic at 4:30pm.
Admission: $10 adults / $5 children under 12 / Children 5 and under free. Scouts in uniform admitted free and receive a Conference House patch.
