The Serpentine Art and Nature Commons met yesterday via Zoom. The group appreciates the work of Jack Bolenbach in preparing the community park for the winter. Sadly, though he discovered that a neighbor of the Commons, on the northern end of the park, high above Van Duzer Street, has simply been dumping their household trash down the hillside. It was so extensive that it took hours to clean up the mess of this unlawful disposal.
There are no clear statistics for the amount of illegal dumping of trash on protected lands, but is widespread in the US and a very expensive problem. Clean-up costs are significant, as access is often complicated. The Commons group along with other groups is trying to raise public awareness, in the hope that waste disposal will always be responsible.
The land trust on Grymes Hill is grateful and thanks Cheryl Garber, who is working on mailing labels for meeting notices and fundraising.
The next meeting via Zoom is on:
