Happy birthday to the Violence Against Women Act ( )! 🎉
VAWA was the first federal legislation acknowledging domestic violence and sexual assault as crimes and providing federal resources. Up for renewal every five years, each VAWA reauthorization has built on existing protections and programs to better meet survivors' needs.
VAWA is also the reason that a group of advocates came together in 1990 to promote federal domestic violence legislation. We led efforts to pass VAWA in 1994 and officially became NNEDV in 1996. 💙
