🚨Major incident alert 🚨

On 8/14/2024 at approximately 2050 hours Bull Head VFD, Fort Run VFD, Castoria VFD, Shine VFD, Snow Hill VFD and Greene County EMS were dispatched to a commercial structure fire at Dawson Farms ( 5900 block of NC Hwy 58 N). Upon Bull Heads arrival a 200 ft shelter full of wheat straw was fully engulfed in flames. Crews from all departments assisted in exposure protection, water supply, traffic control and other fire ground operations. This is still an ongoing incident. Fire is contained within the original area. Crews are rotating shifts to supply personnel. Thank you to all the firefighters and EMS from the departments listed above as well as Walstonburg VFD and North East VFD. We would also like to thank Land Pro for the cases of water and gatorade donated. We would also like to thank our un seen first responders at Greene County Communications! Dispatcher’s worked continuously to answer and monitor all our radio traffic as well as handle all other calls for service flawlessly!

Debby will be a marathon, not a sprint. We may not get the worst of the rain like the 20-30" across parts of South Carolina but we're expecting flash flooding to cause issues. Unless the forecast changes, wouldn't recommend traveling later this week. Highlights below and more info in the comments:

-Worst of Debby Thursday through early Saturday morning. Flash flooding top threat.
-Tornado threat starts Wednesday and is limited to the Crystal Coast for now. Tornado threat may grow later in the week.
-Highest wind gusts (35-55 mph) expected Thursday night.

You may hear our sirens! The purpose of the sirens are to alert the Volunteer Fire Department members of an emergency. While we rely on other forms of communication such as pagers and cell phones, they have their short comings. Batteries die, pagers and cell phones are not on the person, text messaging and smart phone apps like Active 911 could be delayed, with some calls not coming through at all. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that there are at least 2 reliable means to alert firefighters. The siren gets the firefighters attention at any time.

It says to everyone, somebody needs help! When people in town hear the sirens, it tells them there’s an emergency going on somewhere and it helps with traffic. It warns citizens to be alert for volunteers responding to the firehouse and to watch out for fire trucks responding to an incident. When it’s your time of emergency, a siren reassures you that help is on the way!

Like the distance to the closest fire hydrant, fire sirens also help with the cost of homeowner’s insurance, counting as points toward a better score on an Insurance Services Office evaluation. The higher the score given to the fire department, the lower the insurance costs to the homeowner!
