KY 613 in Powell County to be closed beginning Monday, May 11
Project expected to take approximately three months; signed detour posted
JACKSON, Ky. – Drivers who use KY 613 (Little North Fork Road) near Bowen in Powell County will need to find an alternate route beginning Monday, May 11. The road will be closed between KY 11/KY 15 and the Red River bridge for up to three months for correction of flooding issues along the low-lying section of highway between milepoints 0.0 and 0.363.

A signed detour involving KY 11/KY 15, KY 1184, KY 615 and KY 599 through Rosslyn will be posted.

This segment of KY 613 is prone to flooding. This project will raise the height of the roadbed to help alleviate flooding issues which frequently cause the road to be closed. The work is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 1.

Fewer than 425 vehicles use this section of KY 613 each day.

This picture represents a close approximate zone coverage for Powell County’s weather warning siren system. This was made as a guidance reference based upon manufacturer specifications of an approximate 1 mile radius for the type of sirens Powell County has. This does not mean you won’t hear them outside of these zones as other variables do take into effect for sound travel, etc. This is mainly just a reference guide for knowledge purposes.

Keep in mind back in 2001, these sirens were installed based on population data. Powell County Emergency Management is using this data from mapping to look into more coverage options for areas in the county that may be outside of the coverage area due to growth and expansion.

Today's Weather Awareness topic is Recreational Safety. Now is the time to review the information provided by the National Weather Service in Jackson.
We will be closing out Severe Weather Awareness Week tomorrow, Saturday 3/7, with Planning For Weather. We should always plan for emergencies and at least once a year we should review the plan and make changes as need. If you need help in planning please contact the Emergency Management Office at 606-663-7560 or stop by the Emergency Operations Center at 33 Commerce Drive in Stanton.
Stay Aware! Stay Safe!!

Outdoor sports are gearing up, but are you if a storm pops up? Be prepared for, and know how to react to, severe weather hazards like lightning. If you hear thunder or see a flash, immediately seek shelter in an enclosed building or vehicle. Remember, When Thunder Roars Go Indoors! Visit weather.gov/safety/lightning for more.

Todays weather awareness is focused on Hail and thunderstorms.

Todays weather awareness is focused on Hail and thunderstorms.

Another hazard that we issue severe thunderstorm warnings for is hail. But how does hail form? When a strong updraft in a thunderstorm carries raindrops upward into extremely cold parts of the atmosphere, the raindrops freeze. The stronger the updraft, the bigger the hailstone can become before it falls out of the storm. This typically happens when the hailstone becomes too heavy for the updraft.
