Please remember, the tornado sirens are for outside alerting only. You may be able to hear them farther than the one mile radius but they are not intended to wake you up or be heard inside your home.
Have several ways to receive alerts. Signup for CodeRed by Crisis24, download weather apps from local tv or radio stations, national weather apps and NOAA weather alert radios are some of the recommended platforms.
If you need help in planning for an emergency or signing up for alerts, contact Powell County Emergency Management at 606-663-7560 or stop by the office at 33 Commerce Drive in Stanton.

This picture represents a close approximate zone coverage for Powell County’s weather warning siren system. This was made as a guidance reference based upon manufacturer specifications of an approximate 1 mile radius for the type of sirens Powell County has. This does not mean you won’t hear them outside of these zones as other variables do take into effect for sound travel, etc. This is mainly just a reference guide for knowledge purposes.

Keep in mind back in 2001, these sirens were installed based on population data. Powell County Emergency Management is using this data from mapping to look into more coverage options for areas in the county that may be outside of the coverage area due to growth and expansion.

Thunderstorms produce deadly lightning capable of striking up to 10 miles away from the storm. So, even if you don't see rain, you could be in harm’s way. Remember these two simple messages. 1) When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors! 2) See a Flash, Dash inside!
