RADIO READ METERS – TODAY’S INFRASTRUCTURE!
The City of Stanton is committed to providing reliable, efficient, and cost-effective water service to our customers. One way we can improve water service is through the use of radio-read water meters. This technology provides important benefits to both the City and Stanton water customers.
1. More Accurate Meter Readings
Radio-read meters allow water meter readings to be collected electronically rather than requiring an employee to manually read each meter. This helps reduce human error and provides more consistent readings. More accurate readings can help ensure that customers are billed based on their actual water usage.
2. Faster and More Efficient Service
With radio-read technology, meter information can be collected quickly without requiring a meter reader to physically access every meter. This can reduce both the time and resources required to read meters.
3. Easier Detection of Leaks
Radio-read meters can provide valuable information about water usage patterns. Unusual or continuous water consumption may indicate a leak or other problem. Identifying these situations sooner can help customers reduce wasted water, avoid unnecessary charges, and prevent potentially costly damage to their property.
4. Improved Customer Service
Better meter information can help the City respond more effectively when customers have questions about their water bills or usage. Electronic readings can provide a clearer picture of consumption and help staff investigate unusual usage or billing concerns.
5. Increased Employee Safety
Radio-read meters reduce the need for employees to enter yards, walk through difficult terrain, or access meters located near roads, fences, vegetation, or other obstacles. This creates a safer working environment for City employees while also reducing inconvenience for customers.
To help make this important improvement possible, the City of Stanton has submitted a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application requesting $1.3 million in funding to support the implementation of radio-read water meters. If awarded, the CDBG funding would allow the City to begin upgrading a portion of its customers to digital, radio-read water meters, providing a step toward a more accurate, efficient, and responsive water system. However, the requested funding would not be sufficient to upgrade all customers. The City would need to continue pursuing additional grant opportunities and other funding sources in future years to expand the program and ultimately provide radio-read meters to all water customers.
