Our department has encountered a busy spell, tackling numerous heat-related calls during the Bigfoot festival in Stanton and later offering mutual aid to Clay City Fire Department for a house fire in the 5000 block area of Main Street. Unfortunately, the heat took its toll on multiple firefighters at the scene, leading to one being hospitalized for observation and later released after treatment. Furthermore, our team assisted Middle Fork Fire Department with a barn fire on North Bend Road's 1500 block through in county mutual aid.

Today, the members of Stanton Fire Department are proud to celebrate a very special person, Lieutenant Bonnie McIntosh!

For 25 years, Bonnie has been a dedicated member of our department, serving our community with pride, determination, and a heart for helping others. Her commitment to the fire service and the people around her has made a lasting impact on everyone who has had the privilege of serving alongside her.

If you know Bonnie, you know she’s never been one to hold back. She’s outspoken, strong-willed, and definitely hard-headed at times, but those are just a few of the many reasons we love her. She brings energy, passion, and plenty of laughter wherever she goes, and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind or stand up for what she believes in.

Outside of the department, Bonnie enjoys camping, cooking, listening to old music, and making trips to Tennessee to spend time with her grandson.

Bonnie is also the one who organizes all of the Veterans Funeral flags we do throughout Powell county.

Bonnie, thank you for 25 years of dedication, friendship, and service. Thank you for the laughs, the stories, the lessons, and for always being unapologetically yourself. Stanton Fire Department wouldn’t be the same without you.

We hope your birthday is filled with family, friends, great memories, and all the things that bring you happiness.

Happy Birthday, Bonnie! We love you, appreciate you, and are proud to call you part of the Stanton Fire Department family.

Earlier this week, Stanton Fire responded to an electrical fire caused by a sudden power surge inside a home.

The surge overloaded the electrical system and ignited components within the breaker box. Thanks to a fast response from our crews, the fire was contained quickly and no injuries were reported.

Electrical fires can happen with little warning, and power surges are one of the leading causes, especially during periods of heavy grid demand, storms, or when aging wiring is involved. Even a brief surge can damage appliances, weaken wiring, or cause overheating behind walls.

We want to share a few important reminders to help keep your home safe:

• Install surge protection
Whole‑home surge protectors or individual surge‑protected power strips can reduce the risk of fires caused by sudden voltage spikes.

• Pay attention to warning signs
Flickering lights, warm outlets, buzzing sounds, or frequently tripped breakers are all indicators that something isn’t right. These issues should be checked by a licensed electrician.

• Keep your breaker box clear and accessible
Avoid storing items in front of or around your electrical panel. Quick access helps both homeowners and first responders in an emergency.

• Have older wiring inspected
Homes with aging electrical systems are more vulnerable to surges and overheating. Routine inspections can catch problems before they become dangerous.

• Never ignore unusual smells
A burning or “hot plastic” odor near outlets, appliances, or your breaker box is a sign to shut off power and call for help.

Staying aware of your home’s electrical health is one of the simplest ways to prevent emergencies. We appreciate our community’s continued support and vigilance. If you ever feel unsure about a potential electrical issue, it’s always better to be safe and have it checked.

During National EMS Week 2026, Stanton Fire Department would like to take a moment to recognize and sincerely thank the emergency medical professionals who dedicate their lives to serving others throughout Powell County and the surrounding region.

Every day, EMS providers answer the call regardless of the circumstances, weather conditions, time of day, or personal sacrifice involved. They respond when people are experiencing some of the worst moments of their lives — bringing not only medical care, but also compassion, reassurance, and hope. Their work often goes unseen by the public, but the impact they make on individuals, families, and communities is immeasurable.

We especially want to recognize our local EMS partner, Powell County EMS, for the exceptional care and service they provide to our community each and every day. The men and women of Powell County EMS routinely operate in difficult and stressful conditions while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and compassion. Whether responding to medical emergencies, motor vehicle collisions, overdoses, traumatic injuries, cardiac emergencies, or other incidents throughout the county, they continue to serve with dedication and pride.

As firefighters, we have the privilege of working alongside Powell County EMS on a regular basis. We witness firsthand the long hours, the emotional toll, the difficult decisions, and the unwavering commitment that EMS professionals carry with them on every call. Their ability to remain calm under pressure while providing lifesaving care is something that deserves tremendous respect and appreciation.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to our regional air medical providers — Air Methods, PHI Air Medical, and Air Evac Lifeteam. These crews provide an invaluable service to Eastern Kentucky and surrounding areas by bringing advanced critical care directly to the patient and rapidly transporting critically injured or ill patients to higher levels of care when every second matters.

The coordination between ground EMS, firefighters, law enforcement, dispatchers, and air medical crews represents the very best of emergency services teamwork. Countless lives have been impacted because of the dedication and professionalism displayed by these providers every single day.

EMS is more than a profession — it is a calling rooted in sacrifice, service, and compassion for others. The work is demanding both physically and emotionally, often requiring providers to place the needs of complete strangers above their own comfort and safety. Yet despite those challenges, EMS professionals continue to show up every day ready to serve their communities.

From all of us at Stanton Fire Department, thank you to every EMT, Advanced EMT, Paramedic, dispatcher, flight crew member, and emergency medical provider for your dedication, professionalism, and commitment to protecting the lives of others.

Your service does not go unnoticed, and our community is stronger because of you.

Happy EMS Week 2026.
