The Benson Grist Mill is an historic site which is the home to the Mill, which was built in 1854, and many other pioneer era buildings and artifacts.

Two buildings. Two very different sides of life in Tooele County.

The Pehrson Barn was built around 1875 by Eric John Pehrson. Its logs were cut in Talywag and Red Pine Canyons, hauled to Vernon by team and wagon, then shaped by hand. Originally topped with a sod roof, it served as a granary and storage building for nearly 75 years.

Beside it sits a sheep camp once owned by James H. Harris, whose operation ran more than 2,200 sheep across the Tooele Valley. Built on the undercarriage of a Model T Ford truck, the camp gave herders a warm bed, a hot meal, and shelter while they watched the flock day and night.

These buildings didn’t begin at Benson Grist Mill, but preserving them here keeps their stories standing.

Come take a closer look. Tooele County history is written in hand-hewn logs, wagon wheels, and the places people once called home.

History has a way of looking right at home under a Tooele County sky.

At Benson Grist Mill, the old cabins, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and towering windmill turn an ordinary afternoon into something worth slowing down for. Walk the grounds, explore the buildings, and see pieces of local history preserved where the stories began.

There are only two months left to visit before the Mill closes for the season on October 31.

Fall just hits different at the Mill. 🍂🌾

Benson Grist Mill is getting ready for two full days of fall fun! Come wander the historic grounds, grab something delicious from the food trucks, browse local vendors and crafts, stop by the Country Store, and let the kids jump into the free activities.

And the setting? An 1854 grist mill, aged wooden buildings, big shade trees, and all that Tooele County history make a pretty great backdrop for a fall day.

Before the school bell rings, make time for a little history. 🌾

Benson Grist Mill is one of those places that makes you slow down and look around. Weathered timber, the massive mill wheel, pioneer-era buildings, green lawns, and wide-open Tooele County skies create a setting that feels far removed from the everyday. It’s right here in our own backyard.

Built in 1854, the grist mill helped serve the growing settlements of Tooele Valley, grinding wheat and corn for generations. The site also has ties to the California Trail, with travelers using nearby Twin Springs and Twin Springs Creek as important water sources on their journey west. Today, the mill remains one of the oldest standing buildings in western Utah and an incredible piece of Tooele County history.

If you’ve never visited, put Benson Grist Mill on your end-of-summer list. Bring the family, explore the historic buildings, learn how the mill worked, and take a few photos while you’re here. The rustic wood, old fences, millstones, and beautiful grounds make an unforgettable backdrop.

There’s something special about standing in a place that has watched more than 170 years of Tooele County history unfold.
