A single image can capture a moment so devastating, no words could ever fully explain.

At approximately 3:45 PM, the Hopatcong Police Department was dispatched to a structure fire at OSCAR (One Step Closer Animal Rescue) located on Stanhope-Sparta Road in Hopatcong.

Upon arrival, officers from the Hopatcong Police Department and Stanhope Police Department encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions. Despite the intense and dangerous circumstances, responders along with courageous OSCAR staff members, employees from Lakeside Construction, and nearby bystanders acted swiftly and selflessly to rescue the majority of the animals prior to the fire department’s arrival.

Thanks to their extraordinary efforts, 37 dogs were safely rescued. Tragically, 6 dogs perished in the fire.

This was truly a coordinated team effort. We extend our sincere gratitude to the following agencies for their assistance and support during this incident:

• Stanhope Police Department
• Byram Township Police Department

At 0358 hours, SNALAC was requested to respond alongside the Stanhope Fire Department for the report of a residential structure fire. Upon arrival, heavy smoke and fire was observed to be coming from the residence.

Both BLS 28-31 and BLS 28-32 responded, as well as Rescue 28-33, and identified two patients that had been inside the residence when the fire had started. As SNALAC began providing care, Saint Clare's Paramedics arrived and began providing Advanced Life Support.

BLS 28-32 later transported with the St Clare’s Paramedics to Love Lane and met with Atlantic Air Ambulance where the patient was transferred to Air One and flown to St. Barnabas for specialty care. The additional patient was transported by BLS 28-31 and St. Clare’s Paramedics to St. Barnabas as well.

While transport was being provided, SNALAC requested assistance from Hopatcong Ambulance Squad, Atlantic Mobile Health and Lakeland Emergency Squad to provide EMS services on scene of the fire until SNALAC units returned. Due to the -4 degree temperatures and harsh conditions, Morris County Office of Emergency Management EMS Mobile Ambulance Bus (MAB) was requested and responded to assist with warming and fire rehabilitation.

Both BLS units later returned to the scene and all SNALAC units cleared around 1030 hours, just over 6.5 hours after dispatch. Eight SNALAC volunteers responded to this incident.

We would like to thank our mutual aid partners for their assistance during this incident, our fire departments and the several additional fire departments that responded. We would also like to thank the St. Clare’s Paramedics who responded with two ALS units to this incident to continue providing exceptional pre-hospital care!

We extend our deepest condolences to the Hopatcong Ambulance Squad as they mourn the untimely loss of one of their own.

Please keep their agency and the Hunsicker Family in your thoughts during this difficult time.

This morning our team was saddened to learn of the loss of one of our members Valentin Hunsicker. Val had become an EMT while at Hopatcong and even though he moved out to Milford PA, he would return to pick up shifts with us to help out. After moving to PA he also became a fire fighter our hearts go out to his family and the Milford fire team. May he rest in peace. We will take it from here brother.

SNALAC extends our deepest condolences to the family of Carmine Ruocco. 💔

On behalf of the members of Netcong Fire Company No. 1, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Carmine Ruocco, owner of Carmine’s Pizzeria, a place that has long been woven into the everyday life of Netcong.

For many of us, Carmine’s has always been a familiar light in the window after long calls, a warm stop on cold nights, and a gathering place where stories are shared over a slice — greeted many times by Carmine himself.

May he Rest in Peace 🕊️
