On October 16, 2018, employees at City Carting & Recycling in Stamford discovered the body of a full-term male infant among recyclable materials. An autopsy determined the infant’s death was a homicide.

The investigation revealed that the waste had originated in Danbury, Ridgefield, and portions of New York before being transported through the commercial waste system to Stamford.
In October 2023, Major Crimes Squad A reopened the case. Using advanced investigative techniques and updated DNA technology, Detective Nucera identified biological relatives of the infant. Sgt. Garay and Detectives Nucera, Whitehead, and Herman conducted surveillance and obtained discarded DNA samples, ultimately confirming a biological match to the infant’s father.

Further investigation identified the infant’s mother. Following multiple interviews, she confessed to giving birth in Danbury on October 12, 2018, and placing the infant, while still alive, inside a dumpster. The infant was subsequently transported through the waste system and discovered at the Stamford recycling facility.

On June 18, 2026, the woman was arrested and charged with Murder with Special Circumstances. Her bond was set at $750,000.

The dedication, perseverance, and investigative efforts of Sgt. Garay and Detectives Nucera, Whitehead, and Herman brought a resolution to this heartbreaking case nearly eight years later. Their work resulted in the identification and arrest of the person responsible for this tragic crime.

Retired United Airlines flight attendant Paul Veneto Paulie's Push pushes an airline beverage cart along routes symbolizing the flight paths of the four aircraft’s hijacked on September 11, 2001. Paulie pushes these carts in honor of the flight crews of each of these airlines- the ‘first, first responders’ that day. Paulie wants to never forget the heroic actions of these flight attendants and wants everyone to remember how unified we all became in the days and months after 9/11.

When Paulie and the carts reach Ground Zero by September 11, 2026 it will have been pushed over 1,000 miles. Those final miles the carts will be pushed by members of many of the very communities that he’ll pass through, as well as members of the September 11 community who join him along the route. It was truly amazing to watch our community come and support Paulie along his route through Stamford today! From people waving, honking their horns and even joining in for parts of the walk it really shows how our community comes together! May we all never forget!

A Huge Shoutout to Army Captain Joe Colavito!

The Stamford Police Department would like to congratulate U.S. Army Captain Joe Colavito on the incredible honor of being selected to sing the National Anthem at the Little League World Series!

Joe and his wife, Jenna, are proud Stamford residents and great friends of the Stamford Police Department. Over the years, they have graciously shared their talents with us, singing the National Anthem alongside our Honor Guard at numerous ceremonies and special events.

Joe, this is a well-deserved opportunity, and we know you will represent Stamford and our country proudly on such a special stage.

Well done, Captain Colavito! Thank you for your service to our country, your continued support of the Stamford Police Department, and the tremendous relationship you and Jenna have built with our department. We are proud to call you both friends of SPD!

Service doesn’t end when class does!

Two recruits from Stamford Police Academy Class #015 were leaving the academy when they came across a citizen with a flat tire. They stopped to lend a hand and got the tire changed and the citizen safely back on the road.

It may seem like a small thing, but these are the moments that remind us what being a police officer is all about—helping people and serving our community, whenever and wherever we can.

Great job, recruits! Class #015 is already putting service into action.

Harry Bennett Branch Library Assistant Seve Orozco was honored by the Stamford Police Department CT for his quick response during an emergency.

Seve, who courageously jumped into action when a colleague suffered a cardiac emergency at work. Seve used an (AED machine) defibrillator to provide life-saving assistance, taking decisive action when every moment mattered.

🚨UPDATE: LOCATED!!!🚨

The Stamford Police Department: SIJO Unit is attempting to locate juvenile, Peyton Lovett. On 9/1/2026, Detectives spoke with Peyton’s family who stated that Peyton is being reported as a missing person. Peyton was last seen by her mother when she returned home around 12:00pm on 8/31/2026. Peyton left her home on the west side of Stamford, CT on foot walking eastbound on Tresser Blvd., possibly going to the train station. Peyton could be walking with a limp. Peyton’s family believes she could have returned to NYC, which is where she has been located in the past. On Friday, September 11, 2026, at 7:00 PM, the Stamford Fire Department will host a 25th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Woodside Fire Station, 1620 Washington Blvd.

Join us as we come together to honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call that day.

The public is warmly invited to attend. We encourage members of our community to stand together with our police, fire, EMS, and other public safety personnel as we remember, honor, and never forget.
