How much do you know about ovarian cancer risk? September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, a time to learn more about this disease. Some things can make a woman more likely to get ovarian cancer. Age is one of the biggest factors. Most cases happen in women over 50. Having family members with ovarian, breast, or colon cancer can also raise your risk, especially if it’s linked to genes passed down in families, like BRCA1 or BRCA2.

Other things that may raise risk include never having been pregnant, starting your period at a young age, or going through menopause later in life. Having these risk factors doesn’t mean you will get ovarian cancer, but knowing about them can help you talk to your doctor about screening and staying healthy.

Tips for staying on top of your health:
1. Talk to your doctor about your family’s health history.
2. Ask about genetic testing if cancer runs in your family.
3. Pay attention to changes in your body and don’t ignore symptoms that stick around.
4. Get regular checkups, including pelvic exams.

World Su***de Prevention Day is observed each year to raise awareness about su***de and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. It is a reminder that mental health struggles often go unseen, and that support, understanding, and open conversation can make a real difference.

If you or someone you know is struggling, you are not alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. There are many resources available, including options to text or call if that feels more comfortable. Please share this with anyone who may be in need.

Did you know a walk outside in cooler weather can do more for your mood than a treadmill session indoors? As the days get shorter, it’s easy to slow down, but a little movement goes a long way in keeping your energy and mood steady through the season.

So this fall, why not try a route you haven’t walked before? Head to Cove Island Park for the open water views and that crisp breeze off the Sound, wander the shaded trails at Mianus River Park, or take a slower walk through Bartlett Arboretum to catch the leaves changing. Choose one and add it to your routine this week.

Happy Labor Day! Today, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank our incredible staff for all that they do. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment do not go unnoticed, and we are truly grateful for everything they bring each day.

Labor Day is also a reminder to everyone in our community to take a moment for yourself. While the work you do is important, so is taking care of yourself. We hope you take some time today to slow down, rest, recharge, and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Are you staying active, connected, and on top of your health? September is Healthy Aging month. Here is your reminder that health looks different for everyone, and small, consistent actions can make a real difference in how you feel day to day, no matter your background or ability.

A few ways to support healthy aging:
1. Move your body. Walking, stretching, or light exercise helps maintain strength and balance.
2. Stay connected. Social relationships have a real impact on mental and emotional health.
3. See your provider regularly. Screenings and check-ups catch health concerns early.
4. Eat well and stay hydrated. Nutrition needs shift as we age, so fuel your body accordingly.

Are you washing your hands long enough to make a difference? As we move into September, cold, flu, RSV, and COVID season is right around the corner. One of the simplest and most effective things you can do to protect yourself and others around you is regular handwashing.

Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or sing "Happy Birthday" twice. This should be done before eating, after using the restroom, after coughing or sneezing, and after being in a public space. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer.

September is National Recovery Month. This month, we’re supporting Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services’ LiveLOUD campaign and its message of hope for people living with opioid use disorder.

One simple way to help keep kids safe is to keep medications locked up and out of reach. Safe medication storage can help prevent accidental ingestion and misuse.
