Our business/ administrative hours are Monday- Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

EXCELLENCE IN ACTION: SPD COMPLETES YEAR 2 CALEA ASSESSMENT WITH NO DISCREPANCIES

The Stallings Police Department is proud to announce the successful completion of our Year 2 CALEA virtual assessment, conducted on August 12, 2026 — with no discrepancies identified during the review.
SPD began its accreditation journey with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in March 2021 and earned initial accreditation on July 27, 2024.
CALEA accreditation is a nationally recognized benchmark for professional law enforcement agencies, with standards addressing policies and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
But accreditation isn't simply an achievement earned once every four years. It represents an ongoing commitment to professionalism, accountability, continuous improvement, and excellence in service. Throughout the accreditation cycle, SPD must continually demonstrate compliance with CALEA standards through regular reviews of our policies, practices, and performance.
We are especially proud to be:

🔹 One of only two CALEA-accredited law enforcement agencies in Union County, alongside the Monroe Police Department.
🔹 One of only four CALEA-accredited law enforcement agencies in Mecklenburg County, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Cornelius Police Department, and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
🔹 One of only 10 municipal police departments in North Carolina with fewer than 40 officers to achieve CALEA accreditation.

Today, Sergeant Smith graduated from a six-week Police K9 Instructor/Trainer Course at Ventosa K9 LLC, focused on developing the skills necessary to train and instruct both K9 handlers and their K9 partners. The course covered patrol and narcotics detection, K9 selection, obedience, tracking, searches, apprehension, problem-solving, deployment techniques, and K9 program administration.

Attached is a press release in reference to the fatal collision that occurred on July 19, 2026.

Throughout the investigation, our investigators have worked diligently to follow the evidence, interview witnesses, and establish a complete and accurate picture of what occurred that night.

PRESS RELEASE

On July 19, 2026, at approximately 8:58 p.m., the Stallings Police Department responded to a three-vehicle collision in the 6100 block of Stevens Mill Road. Upon arrival, officers found multiple individuals with serious injuries. Four of the six people involved in the collision were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

During the investigation, officers determined that a vehicle driven by Mariaha N. Ladd, 18, was traveling northbound on Stevens Mill Road when she attempted to pass another vehicle in a designated no-passing zone. While in the southbound lane, Ladd’s vehicle sideswiped an oncoming vehicle and then struck a second vehicle head-on.

On July 22, 2026, the Stallings Police Department was notified that Shannon Oxendine Bennett, a passenger in the vehicle struck head-on, had died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

Based on information gathered during the extensive investigation, speed, illegal passing, and impairment are believed to have been contributing factors in the collision. As a result of the investigation, Ladd has been charged with Second-Degree Murder and two counts of Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle.

The Stallings Police Department appreciates the assistance provided by the Union County District Attorney’s Office, Monroe Police Department, and Union County Sheriff’s Office throughout this investigation.

On July 13th, 2026 the Stallings Police Dept. received an online cyber tip of an individual exploiting minors online.
�On July 24th, 2026, following an extensive investigation conducted by the Criminal Investigations Division, the Stallings Police Dept. arrested Nicholas Suarez. Suarez was transported to Union County Jail where he was issued a $500,000 bond. Suarez was charged with 5 counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, (2nd Degree).
