There are many great traditions in the fire service, but one of the best might just be cake and ice cream.

As we welcome new firefighters, we also welcome them into a tradition that has been passed down through many fire houses. When a new recruit firefighter experiences a “first”, cake and ice cream are in order. First day on shift, first time punching a clock as a firefighter, first time walking up the stairs as a firefighter, first medical call, first fire, first fire alarm and the list goes on.

The rule is simple: you have to bake it yourself. Help is allowed, but store bought cakes do not count.

Traditions like this may seem small, but they are part of what makes the fire service special. They remind us to stay humble, to celebrate the journey and to never forget the people who help us along the way.

Some cakes even come with a sense of humor!

Yesterday was a special day at the Stafford Fire Department as we welcomed two new firefighters and celebrated the promotion of one of our own.

Caitlyn Pham and Erik Moreno were welcomed to the Stafford Fire Department family with a pinning ceremony, while we celebrated Matt Cyrus being promoted to Battalion Chief. We are so proud of each of them and thank them for helping keep Stafford safe!

Heads up Stafford! The Stafford area is under a marginal risk of severe storms and excessive rainfall today.

Severe weather is possible today from the late morning through early evening as a cold front moves through Southeast Texas. Severe hazards are possible, including flooding, damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes.

While it is only a minor chance for the Houston region, please stay weather-aware, monitor local forecasts and have multiple ways to receive alerts throughout the day. Follow the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office for updates and remember that the City of Stafford also has an Alert Center for local Severe Weather Updates.
