This past weekend, our community defense neighborhood groups got together to spend some time in community and to share all the work they've been doing to protect their neighbors. From getting Flock out of their neighborhoods to getting local schools to adopt a safety plan, these groups have carried community defense work in our region forward.

It is not a coincidence that the most powerful community defense networks are built block by block. The neighborhood is central to political, social, and civic life, and these groups remind us of that.

As AANHPI Heritage Month comes to a close, we're holding deep gratitude for the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities we have the honor of serving and standing alongside.

This month — and every month — we're fighting for AANHPI immigrants who deserve to be seen, heard, and represented. That work is the point.

Thank you to every person who has let us be part of their story ❤

URGENT🚨:
Everyone deserves a fair chance in court ⚖️ — but right now, too many Illinois families are navigating the legal system alone.

The Access to Justice program helps make legal representation possible, but it needs full funding to meet the need. We’re calling on Illinois lawmakers to invest $50 million so families aren’t left behind. Many of our clients live in Southern Illinois, and Access to Justice provides MICA with critical funding to serve them. MICA is proud to be part of the Access to Justice network and we need the help of our Illinois-based supporters to maintain this partnership.

Add your voice and take action before the May 31st deadline!📣: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/protect-illinois-families-fully-fund-access-to-justice-at-50-mil…

Last Friday, MICA joined a coalition of local organizations for a rally to demand that our elected officials invest $150 million from the Rams settlement to North City. We are proud to stand with our Northside neighbors as they continue to rebuild following the tornado. It’s long overdue for the City to provide support for relief and recovery efforts, and send the message that North STL won’t be left behind.

The Board of Police Commissioners recently filed a lawsuit to force the City to allocate an additional $68 million to SLMPD in the next seven weeks, with most of this funding coming from the Rams settlement. We are concerned by this outrageous request and its effect on our immigrant neighbors.

In our region, the majority of people detained by ICE were detained after an interaction with police. Almost all of these stops were traffic-related and many were based solely on racial profiling. More funding for the police means more stops, more surveillance and more harm to vulnerable communities. The Rams settlement is an opportunity to make an investment that builds up our communities, not tears them apart.

Last Wednesday, the Hands Off STL Coalition headed to Jefferson City to watch the first day of Rogers et al. v. The State of Missouri, a lawsuit filed by Mike Milton, Jamala Rogers, and ArchCity Defenders. This lawsuit is about more than the state takeover of SLMPD: it’s a fight for St. Louis’ right to govern itself.

After 150 years of state control, Missouri voters passed Proposition A in 2012, making it clear they were in support of local control. HB 495, which put SLMPD under the control of the state-appointed Board of Police Commissioners, is yet another attempt by the state legislature to overturn the will of the people. We must let our local officials know that they must fight to protect democracy.

Join us at any of the upcoming public hearings on the City Budget to demand the Board of Alderpersons to reject the proposed police budget, which has resulted in cuts to key programs like Code Blue, Right to Counsel, and the Office of Violence Prevention.
