“I was confused and didn’t know who to turn to. I was being harassed by my ex via Facebook posts and through their family. I just wanted it to stop. I had reached out to a random attorney seeking advice and he told me to call this hotline and speak to the legal advocate. The advocate was so kind, understanding, and knowledgeable. She helped me not only fill out and file an order of protection but also how to document the abuse, walk through how to report it and was with me that day in court. I don’t know, what I would have done without them.”

“I originally got involved with the program because I came to the ER from the last physical assault. I was feeling so defeated and that I was not only physically broken but mentally as well. I didn’t know this then, but the hospital reached out to Bridgeway to have an advocate come sit with me and offer resources. The advocate walked me through what my options were. I went back that time because I wasn't ready to leave, however I kept what she said to heart. After about a year and a half I was ready and reached back out. The staff were not judgmental, they listened and understood that it was a process. I worked with the case manager to start a plan on how to leave as well as safety planned. I don’t know what I would have done without them.”

“One of the biggest breakthroughs for me was in the support group. I met other women who had gone through similar situations, and hearing their stories made me realize that I wasn’t the only one. The shame and isolation that had kept me silent for so long began to melt away as I started to share my own experiences. The group was a safe space where we could all heal together, and it gave me the courage to face the future with a sense of hope.”

"For a long time, I didn’t realize that what I was experiencing was domestic violence. I thought it was just part of a relationship—disagreements, heated arguments, occasional threats. It took years for me to understand that it wasn’t just about anger or conflict; it was control, manipulation, and emotional abuse. I was ashamed to talk about it. As a man, I was taught that I was supposed to be strong, that I should protect those around me, and that admitting vulnerability was a sign of weakness. For the longest time, I hid my pain. I suffered in silence, often feeling trapped. I felt like I had no way out, and that no one would understand if I spoke up. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Despite my reservations, I reached out. I didn't know it at the time, but that decision would be the first step towards reclaiming my life. Looking back, I realize how pivotal this program was in giving me the tools I needed to get out of an abusive relationship and regain control of my life. I am no longer a victim of abuse. I am a survivor. The outreach program didn’t just provide help—it gave me hope. Today, I’m in a much healthier place. I’m in therapy regularly, I’ve learned how to assert myself and express my emotions more openly, and I’m slowly rebuilding the trust I lost in myself. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been.”

“I was married to a man for roughly 15 years, and I felt such guilt when I chose to leave. I had taken vows to this man in front of God, and he would always throw up that we were supposed to be together for better or for worse. I stayed because I thought it was my Christian duty, but at the end of the day I had to take care of me. I entered in shelter with literally nothing but the clothes on my back. The team was amazing and helped me find a job and house that I love. Now when I look back at my reason for staying, my vows, I realize that I wasn’t the one who broke them. When I agreed for better or for worse, I didn’t agree to being abused in an unequal partnership. That God wanted me to feel safe with my husband not to fear him.”

"It wasn’t always this way. I didn’t start out in an abusive relationship. At first, he was charming, loving, everything I thought I wanted. But over time, things changed. His love became control, and his concern became suffocating. My world shrank, and so did my sense of self-worth. I spent years trying to justify his behavior, rationalizing every cruel word, every shove, every belittling comment. It wasn’t until physical violence began that I realized just how dangerous things had gotten. The bruises, the fear, the constant anxiety—it took over my life. I became a shell of the person I once was. I stayed because I was scared. Scared of him, scared of being alone, scared of what people might think and most of all, scared of what might happen if I left. I found Bridgeway through google. I was shaking when I made that first call. When I left it was hard, my emotions were all over the place and although it took years to get to where I am now, I am so happy I left."

“For years, I lived in a cycle of fear, shame, and isolation. I was in an abusive relationship with my partner, and every day felt like I was suffocating. He controlled everything—where I went, who I spoke to, even how much money I could spend. I thought I could never escape because he had convinced me I was worthless, that I’d never be able to make it on my own. But deep down, I knew I had to leave. I had to protect myself and, most importantly, my two young children. When we arrived at the shelter, I was overwhelmed with emotions. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but as soon as we walked through the doors, I was met with kindness. The staff immediately made us feel safe, and for the first time in years, I felt like I could breathe. They took us in without judgment and offered us a place to stay. I knew then that this was the first step toward a new life.”

“I came in to shelter the day before Christmas. I had nothing but the clothes on our backs. We left so quickly I wasn’t able to grab any of the kids' gifts and honestly, I had the conversation with them that Santa might not be able to find us this year but that we would still have each other. I was not expecting it when the kids came running back into the room to wake me up. I will never forget the look on their faces when they screamed Santa found us! Under the Christmas tree at shelter, there were presents for everyone, even me. That happened back in 99, and I still have the blanket that I got.”

“I had been out of my abusive situation for a few years; however, I still had a hard time trusting myself. I called the crisis line actually looking for advice. They helped me get on the waiting list for their therapy services. The therapist was so sweet and understanding, she walked me through how to heal and helped me develop a toolbox to use.”

“We are taught that as a man, we are the protectors of our family. That we never hit women, that we love and cherish our wives. I never thought that I would be in fear for my life and dreading who I would come home to at night. Would it be the sweet caring women I used to love, or would it be this woman I didn’t even recognize? I couldn’t take it anymore and left. I called the hotline after a work friend of mine noticed me struggling, and I thank God that she did. They met with me, listened to me and referred me to a free lawyer service to help me with a divorce.”

“I became an outreach client a long time ago. My husband kept such a tight grip on our finances. I was stumped when the advocate asked me how much he made and I couldn’t tell her if he made $5 an hour or $50. After a lot of hard work, I was able to break out on my own. When I left, I felt like I grew wings. I was free for the first time in 12 years. I styled my hair differently for the first time, something that I always wanted to do but wasn’t allowed to. I bought myself colorful clothes, went out with my friends and found myself again.”

The why, when, and how.

The Terry L. Robertson Center officially opened its doors in February 1998. It was named after Terry L. Robertson, a woman and domestic violence victim who was killed by her abuser, Christmas 1994.

The Terry L. Robertson Center re-opened in 2018 after renovations, and continues to provide emergency shelter for women escaping domestic violence along with a myriad of resources for abuse victims including legal advocacy and counseling.

Our objective is to help keep our clients safe and empower them to make the best decisions for their lives, in a compassionate and judgement free environment.
