THROWBACK THURSDAY

Here is a rural fire from roughly 70 years ago. You’ll see how fire gear, apparatus and building construction have changed. However, many tactics, tools and hose have remained the same. Unfortunately, the results of a building fire often remain devastating for families.

Today we recognize Engineer Justin Porter.

Justin has served with the St. Charles City Fire Department for six years. He graduated from Christian High School in O’Fallon in 2012 and began his EMS career with Mercy EMS in 2015. He later served with Rock Community Fire Protection District before joining SCFD in 2020.

Justin is assigned as the Engineer at House 5 on B-Shift. He also serves as a paramedic and is one of B-Shift’s primary fire investigators.

Justin’s wife and children are his greatest passion. When off duty, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and beekeeping.

We thank Engineer Porter for his dedication and service to the City of St. Charles.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. yesterday, St. Charles City Fire Department crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Lone Hickory Court for a reported residential structure fire.
First-arriving crews encountered heavy fire conditions involving the garage, with fire extending into the attic. Firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack. As conditions within the structure deteriorated, crews were withdrawn and transitioned to a defensive operation.
The incident was upgraded to a second alarm due to the extent of the fire and the hot weather conditions. The upgraded alarm brought additional personnel and resources to the scene, allowing crews to maintain safe and effective firefighting operations while rotating personnel in the extreme heat.
Fortunately, the residents were home at the time of the fire and were able to safely evacuate. No injuries were reported. The cause is still under investigation.
Two additional structures were also impacted by the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the incident.

Today we recognize Senior Financial Analyst Brijette Struyk, who has been with the St. Charles City Fire Department for about a year and a half.

Before joining SCFD, Brijette worked for the Department of Defense. She graduated from Duchesne High School and attended Lindenwood University.

When she is not working, Brijette spends most of her time with family and attending her kids’ sporting events. Her daughter plays volleyball, her son races BMX, and most recently, the family dropped their oldest son off at Mizzou to start his next chapter.

We thank Brijette for her continued service and dedication to the City of St. Charles.

MISSOURI RIVER RESCUE

Earlier this week at approximately midnight on Monday the 17th. St. Charles City Fire and Police responded to the Olive Street boat ramp for a person in the Missouri River needing assistance.

Two adult males had entered the river to swim when one was caught by the current and carried downstream. The other individual called 911.

SCFD and our regional partners immediately began a search of the river. Three fire and rescue boats were launched while St. Charles City Police deployed two drones to assist from the air.

The individual was located by the SCFD boat crew approximately 1.5-2 miles downriver. He was successfully rescued from the Missouri River by an SCFD Rescue Swimmer. He was returned to the Olive Street boat ramp and transferred to St. Charles County Ambulance District for transport to a local hospital.

This rescue shows the importance of our regional response system and the coordination between fire, EMS, and law enforcement.

WARNING ! The Missouri River is powerful and unpredictable. Strong currents can quickly carry a person downstream.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITY 🚒

We would like to thank Immanuel Lutheran School for allowing St. Charles City Fire Department crews to conduct training in two older homes along Seventh Street that are scheduled for demolition.

Opportunities like this give our crews a chance to train in real structures and conditions we cannot always duplicate at the firehouse or in the training towers.

Crews were able to work on hose line operations, aerial bucket operations, roof access, ventilation, and other fireground skills.

Over the coming month, our crews will continue to use these properties for additional training evolutions, giving different crews the opportunity to work through a variety of fireground scenarios before the buildings are demolished.

We appreciate Immanuel Lutheran School for giving our crews access to these properties. Real buildings. Real repetitions. Better preparation for when it counts.
