The storms yesterday, 8/6/2026, left a lot of trees down and both N and P hwys blocked. Multiple organizations were out clearing these trees, including Squires Volunteer Fire Department. A big a thank you to City of Ava Fire, Ava Rural Fire Department and the Douglas County EMA office for their assistance.

We have two board positions up for reelection this year: vice president and secretary. The current holders of these positions are running for reelection. If you wish to run for either position, please reach out to us and we will send you an application. The application must be submitted before Monday, August 10th. Applicants should plan to attend the August board meeting on August 10th at 6pm.

It's unusually dry this spring; fire danger is high right now, which is unusual this time of year. Please be careful.

Squires Volunteer Fire Department Official Update

Due to the overwhelming success of our recent online auction, the department has decided to move forward with an ambitious expansion into a tactical region we are less familiar with: Air Support.

While we looked into helicopters and tankers, we’ve decided to go a more cost-effective route. We recently acquired a large flock of military surplus pigeons through a federal equipment grant. These "Aero-Avian" units are currently being trained for precision water-drop operations.

Specifications:
Payload: 1.5 ounces of water per bird.

Navigation: Integrated homing beacons (they always return to the station for refills).

Cost: Very low (mostly birdseed and the occasional windshield cleaning).

Training for our new "Squires Air One" squadron begins this week. If you see a synchronized flock hovering over a brush fire, please do not be alarmed. It’s just the future of rural fire protection.

Elevated fire danger expected again today as gusty southerly winds up to 30 to 40 mph at times combine with a dry air mass. Elevated Fire Danger means that weather and land conditions are favorable for erratic fire spread, if a fire does start.
