Look for the precipitation to switch to snow late this evening and persisting through Thursday morning, before diminishing. Gusty winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow, creating hazardous roads. If you travel tonight, use low beams and allow extra time.

A potentially historic storm will bring a wide variety of precipitation to the Northland. One thing is certain, rain is expected with some amounts approaching one inch or more in northeast Minnesota. Localized flooding may occur in areas that receive the most rain.

There are number of reasons why this event could be historic. Winds could reach climatological maximums in the regions where we have the high wind warnings. Expected rainfall is high and we may break various moisture records. And models suggest that we could break the December low pressure record, which was set in 1948. Not to mention the severe weather threat, which while mostly out of our forecasting area, is very rare.

Low water levels continue to create challenges at boat launches.

🚤 As this year’s drought continues boaters may want to consider landing their boat for the season. The low water levels are putting boats and trailers at risk of getting stuck.

⚠️ If you do plan to launch your boat ALWAYS check the end of the ramp before launching and look for hazards such as deep holes and high mounds created by power loading.

🚤 Boaters can incur costly repairs or encounter problems when they unknowingly back trailer wheels into these holes, damaging their trailer frames on the submerged ramps or getting their trailer stuck, potentially requiring tow truck assistance.
