Captain Burleson of the Spruce Pine Police Department has concluded an investigation into alleged financial fraud.

As a result of the investigation, Hunter Honeycutt and Whitney Albers were identified as suspects in the case. It is alleged that the individuals unlawfully transferred funds from a victim’s bank account without authorization using a mobile payment application.

Hunter Honeycutt was charged with:

* Obtaining Property by False Pretense
* Conspiracy to Obtain Property by False Pretense

Whitney Albers was charged with:

* Conspiracy to Obtain Property by False Pretense
* Obstruction of Justice
* Resist, Obstruct, or Delay a Public Officer

During the arrest, Albers was also found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine. As a result, Albers was additionally charged with:

* Possession of Methamphetamine
* Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

On May 23, 2026, Officer Austin with the Spruce Pine Police Department conducted a traffic stop. A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Kirsten Whisnant, was known to have outstanding warrants for her arrest. Whisnant initially provided a false name to officers.

During a subsequent search of Whisnant’s belongings, officers located a trafficking amount of suspected fentanyl along with various items of drug paraphernalia.

Whisnant was charged with the following:
• Trafficking in Fentanyl by Possession
• Trafficking in Fentanyl by Transportation
• Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance
• Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver (PWIMSD) a Schedule II Controlled Substance
• Resist, Obstruct, or Delay a Public Officer

Whisnant was also served with outstanding warrants for Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

SPRUCE PINE, N.C. — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is providing details regarding an incident that occurred earlier today while Special Agents were serving an arrest warrant near 12021 NC Highway 226 in Spruce Pine.

A team of Special Agents, in cooperation with Spruce Pine Police Department, was serving an arrest warrant on a subject charged with two counts of Statutory S*x Offense with a child 15 years or younger and one count of Statutory R**e of a child 15 years or younger. When approached by the Special Agents, the suspect drew a concealed weapon and sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The discharged round also struck an SBI Special Agent in his protective vest.

SBI agents immediately rendered medical aid and secured the scene. The suspect was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect is identified as Timothy Alan Hoilman (DOB 06/22/1973).

The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Spruce Pine Police Department responded to the scene and assisted.

On May 13, 2026, Officer Young conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan passenger vehicle for traffic violations. During the stop, a rear passenger fled on foot but was apprehended after a short pursuit.

Officer Young and his K9 Knox conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle and K9 Knox gave a positive alert for the presence of the odor of narcotics. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
