On Tuesday night three young Springville residents were honored with Mayor's Youth Awards.
Thomas John (left), a ninth-grade student at Springville Junior High, was nominated by Maria Olivia who said: "Thomas bring such a light to the classroom! He is curious and asks questions often. He participates in class and always has a smile. He ask engaging questions and is always willing to help those around him! He is a GREAT student!” Thomas has been heavily involved over the years with advocacy work with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He has worked to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes, support fundraising and research efforts and events.
Trevor Ogles (right), a ninth-grade student at Springville Junior High, was nominated by Shellie Anderson, who said: "Trevor has put up with me confusing his name since 7th grade. I know it bothers him that I do this. He also recognizes that my brain has pegged him as Derek. In gest and to help me he came up with the name Trerek. Trevor has a great heart and enthusiasm. At our first dance this year, he spent a lot of his time dedicated to the decorations and making sure the strung lights were on and if they were continuing to hang so students would not step on them. Later in the dance, he organized his own "Air Band" and had a great time playing up until the end!!! Over all, Trevor is respectful and an all-around great young man!!!”
Julia Brown wasn't present to receive her award, but she is also in ninth grade at Springville Junior High. Her teacher Julie Smith said: "Julia was a student in my 8th grade class last year. She always stayed after school to help put away Chromebooks, clean, and organize them. I was very grateful. I was thoroughly surprised when this year, her 9th grade year when she was no longer my student; she comes after school every day to continue to help with the Chromebooks. She always asks how she can help and asks how my day is going. Even if we did not use the Chromebooks that day, she finds a way she can help. She straightens chairs or tries to help in some way. I have never asked her to do this, but every day she makes my day brighter. She says she likes to organize and enjoys helping people. I have offered her a piece of candy for helping out and she always turns it down and says she is just happy to help.”
