Happy Thursday! Hope everyone is safe and as well as could be.

Every once in awhile, it's important to take a break from the day-to-day and just do something fun. We took a day and just danced to the latest Taylor Swift song "Shake it Off". Students, their friends, and even teachers go involved in this fun video.

In this crazy time, take some time to "shake it off" and dance a little bit. Whatever you do, find some time to have some fun!

Enjoy!

It's been a few weeks since I've posted. Sorry 'bout that. It's been a bit crazy.

The Festival of Colors is held each year around this time. Jackson Averett decided to make a film about it. This won 1st Place in the Highlight Video category at the 2014 Utah High School Film Festival.

So, to honor social distancing, let's watch a video where social distancing isn't a thing! Enjoy.

In the wake of seemingly endless troubling news today, hopefully this will bring a smile as you simply "Remember the Red" - the school theme of the 2013-2014 school year.

By this time, seeing someone with a camera at an event was commonplace. We wanted to capture as much of what went on each year as possible. These "graduation videos" were then played at the annual Traditions Assembly at the end of each school year (I wished they could've played at graduation instead).

What was your favorite part of your senior year?

As SHS Live got more established within the Springville culture, it wasn't a surprise to see students take on bigger and more meaningful projects. We had better gear and more confidence in what we were capable of.

Jacob Buhler spent virtually the entire school year making this film after being asked to film just a small part during the homecoming football game. While there are technical issues, they are easily overlooked because of the quality of the story being told - a story about how simple acts of one can affect the goodness of everyone.

This film would perform well at the following year's LDS Film Festival, got second at the Utah High School Film Festival (only because a judge felt there was professional help, which there wasn't), and also was part of the platform for earning SHS it's first General Sterling Scholar Award.

Side note: it's a small part of the reason I was able to get 5 large Frosties for free at the Springville Wendy's.

Enjoy.

Believe it or not, there was a time when students didn't have smart phones. It was easy to manage back then when the only thing people really did was play Snake. But pretty soon, iPhones kind of became the norm.

As smartphones got more popular, so did social media. And with social media came all sorts of social "challenges". One of the first ones was the Harlem Shake. We weren't ones to back away from a challenge, so in the matter of a single day, we organized the greatest Harlem Shake to ever shake SHS (pretty sure it was the only one). Mr. Lewis was getting ready to retire, so why not use him and his legendary devil horn helmet as the center piece.

Probably my favorite part was the fact that we shut down the parking lot after school for about 30 minutes and it made people mad because they couldn't get out (sorry!). Maybe that's why so many decided to get involved.

Alright. So 3 principals later, SHS Live was thriving. I stopped teaching photography classes and was able to start teaching video classes full time starting the 2011-2012 school year (which I later learned surprised a lot of people). We finally separated broadcasting and production classes and were really starting to make some progress.

I believe that 2012 was our first real "Christmas Special" and with that, a tradition was born. Every Christmas Special from then on, we would sing a Christmas song to the school. Feliz Navidad was the first one. The set looked much different back then. it was the first of what would be a few different looks (we tried modeling it after Wayne's World).

If I remember right, we didn't have a super refined "SHS Live Show" at that point, but focused on "The Daily Grind".

What do you remember about the early stages of the SHS Live Show and the Daily Grind?

Year 2 was a huge step forward for us. We had our place (read: classroom) and it was an opportunity for us to really start becoming part of the SHS culture. Many of the videos that were made centered around who we were as a school and community. We started producing the live daily announcements which weren't super pretty, but worked (YouTube wouldn't be available for a few more years). We were on our way.

This video was significant because it was the first of what would become many 1st places at the annual Utah High School Film Festival. We got a trophy and displayed it proudly and believe it or not, it actually motivated students to want to do better.

Winner of the "5 Second Comedy" category at the 2011 Utah High School Film Festival. Produced by Alex Richey.

In honor of today's snow day, remember when we had a snow day in 2010? Remember how there was actually snow that time? And remember how school was cancelled after everyone was already at school? Made for a longer Christmas Break, so that was cool.

Here's what my house looked like that morning.

Alright. This is the most viewed video in SHS Live history and it happened year one. Funny thing is, I attribute the fact that I had a full time job the next year to this video. I had been told there was a chance I would only be a part time teacher. That's also the reason I volunteered to advise the yearbook staff. Needless to say, it was a harder first year than I anticipated and there were some teachers that didn't like what I was trying to do. Then we did the lip dub and all that changed. At the time, this was one of the best lipdubs in the world and put SHS Live on the map.

Lots of students helped plan it and make it happen. Maybe you'll see some familiar faces, maybe some people you've lost contact with. Either way, enjoy!

When I started at SHS, it was the first time there had been a class dedicated to video production. However, it took almost the entire first term before we actually had gear and a classroom. It just so happened that the entire school was being updated so every classroom had a projector and sound system. We didn't have a show. We just made videos. So, this is a video we made before anything SHSLive ever happened. The question was a simple one: What do you want to accomplish by the end of 2010?

What memories do you have of SHSLive?

This film was made at the beginning of 2010. At the beginning of a new year, it's always nice to set goals. This series of answers to the one question, "What...

Wuddup everyone! Did you know that 2020 marks what would have been the 10th Anniversary of SHSLive? Crazy to think all that has transpired over that time. To honor that incredible ride and all who played a part in its development, I’m going to be posting throwback videos every Thursday.

I’d love to hear how you’re doing. Feel free to comment with where you are and what your doing with your life.
