REMEMBRANCE POST
🕯️ Line of Duty Death Remembrance
Fireman Alfred E. Kime
22 May 1943
Today, we honor and remember Fireman Alfred E. Kime of the Springfield Fire Department, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Fireman Kime, age 33, succumbed to injuries sustained when the fire apparatus he was serving on as tillerman was struck by a New York Central System passenger train at the South Fountain Avenue crossing on May 22, 1943.
Historical records detail the tremendous respect shown by the department and community following his passing. An honor guard stood vigil, fellow firefighters served as pallbearers, and city leaders immediately began discussions to improve railroad crossing safety throughout Springfield.
The incident became a catalyst for conversations surrounding public safety protections at railroad crossings within the city.
More than 80 years later, we continue to remember Fireman Alfred E. Kime for his dedication, sacrifice, and service to the citizens of Springfield.
We honor his legacy and all those who have given their lives in the line of duty.
