Kency Gilet for City Council At Large

Kency Gilet for City Council At Large Kency Gilet is running for Springfield City Council - At Large to restore the voice of Springfield. I had a unique upbringing.

Kency was born and raised in NY as a member of a large Haitian-American family after his parents immigrated to the US in the 1980s. Kency received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and his master’s degree in mental health counseling from Pace University where he is now an adjunct professor of psychology. He is a licensed mental health counselor in private practice and clinical supervisor at a me

ntal health and substance abuse rehab. He has been married for 10 years, has 3 children, a German Shepherd named Winston, and
two cats. Today, Kency is also a clinical supervisor at a co-occurring enhance residential treatment program for women struggling with addiction and mental illness. In 2018, Kency started a private counseling practice; providing solution-focused therapy to individuals navigating through difficult life transitions such as divorce and loss. As a devoted father and an engaged member of his community, Kency remains active on his children’s school PTO and serves on two nonprofit boards. I was raised in a large Haitian family as the middle child of 7. My mother and father, Therese and Jean, immigrated to the United States, leaving their career to find better opportunities for their future children. My siblings and I were raised with strong morals and a deep rooted base in our Christian faith. We were encouraged to be imaginative, ambitious, and independent. I attended Pace University in Pleasantville, NY where I received my bachelor's degree in psychology and later my Master's degree in mental health counseling. As a college student I balanced my obligations to schoolwork, being a member of the Track and Cross Country teams, and working part-time jobs. I married my wife, Nadessa, soon after earning my first degree as the age of 21 and we have been married for 8 years this July, 2017. We had our first child Alicia and then our second, Adam, as I worked full time and while earning my Master's degree. This moment in my life I had a deeper understanding of the hard work my parents said I would need to engage in, in order to shape the life I wanted. By the Grace of God I survived my graduate studies and entered the workforce as a psychotherapist; accepting a job in Springfield, MA. Soon after accepting this job offer and preparing to relocate my family from NY I was asked to teach a psychology course at Pace University which I humbly accepted. I have since been teaching a college level psychology courses while working as a psychotherapist. After about a year of working in Springfield, my family decided to purchase a home and the only city I wanted to live in was Springfield. The amazing people I have met and served made the choice to purchase in the City of Homes an easy one. We moved to the East Springfield neighborhood in Ward 2 and began putting our roots down immediately. I got actively involved in my children’s school by becoming the PTO President of Pottenger Elementary where I am currently serving my 2nd term. I’ve dedicated my life to the service of others when I decided to work in the mental health field, I have decided to serve the families of Pottenger Elementary School when I assumed the role as PTO president, and I hope to serve Ward 2 in Springfield as your City Councilor in order to strengthen the opportunities and happiness of your families.
