Every year, more than 100 Illinois residents are killed by domestic violence. Behind these tragedies are people who are our neighbors, classmates, colleagues, friends, and family members. 💜

Domestic violence can affect anyone. Recognizing the warning signs is one way we can help build safer relationships and communities.

Learn to recognize the signs, check in with people you care about, and share resources that can help. Prevention starts with awareness, compassion, and action.

Domestic violence does not have one language, one identity, or one face. 💜

A survivor may speak English, Spanish, or another language. They may be a parent, a student, a coworker, a neighbor, a friend, or a family member. They may share their experience openly, communicate in another language, or not feel safe speaking about it at all.

In this video, some advocates share their message in their own languages, while others hold signs. Every message matters. Every survivor matters.

. Someone in your life may be experiencing domestic violence, even if you don't know it. Listen without judgment, believe survivors, respect their choices, and help them find support when they're ready.

A safety plan isn’t only for survivors. It can also help people who cause harm take responsibility for their actions and prevent further harm.

Recognizing triggers, identifying signs of escalating anger, practicing calming strategies, and choosing behaviors that prioritize another person’s safety are all steps toward accountability.

That may mean stepping away, giving someone space, unblocking an exit, or returning to a conversation without threats, insults, or intimidation.

Progress takes accountability, consistent effort, and changed behavior, not just good intentions.

, and we all have a role and responsibility in promoting safe, peaceful homes, families, and relationships.
