AUGUST 29 -- A DATE ETCHED IN LOUISIANA HURRICANE HISTORY

Three hurricanes. Three Louisiana landfalls. All on August 29, all within 16 years, and all along less than 50 miles of coastline.

Katrina (2005) Cat. 3, 125 mph
Isaac (2012) Cat. 1, 80 mph
Ida (2021) Cat. 4, 150 mph

Katrina and Ida need little introduction. But Isaac is an important reminder that a hurricane’s category doesn't tell the whole story.

Despite making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, Isaac produced storm surge topping 11 feet in parts of SE Louisiana, with inundation reaching as high as 17 feet in some locations.

Why such an extreme surge? Isaac was large, slow-moving, and approached the coast at an angle that allowed persistent onshore winds to pile water into SE Louisiana for an extended period.

Katrina, of course, was among the deadliest hurricanes on record for the U.S., with widely ranging estimates from ~1,300-1,900 fatalities.

And Ida tied Laura (2020) and the Last Island Hurricane (1856) for strongest sustained winds at landfall in LA west of the mouth of the Mississippi River.
