I’m still going strong at the Illinois State Capitol, working hard through the weekend to pass another balanced budget that prioritizes our community’s needs.

The budget isn’t just a list of numbers. It’s a statement of our values. The budget we pass will address our community’s greatest needs. That means we’re fully funding food security, healthcare, and infrastructure—all without new taxes on working people.

The night might be long, but I’m staying here until the job is done! Thank you for all your support!

Today, a major step forward for youth civic engagement in Illinois.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. Youth Voter Empowerment Bill has officially passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly and now awaits the Governor’s signature.

This legislation honors Rev. Jackson’s vision that every young person should enter adulthood not only with a diploma in hand, but with the tools and opportunity to participate in our democracy. By connecting voter registration opportunities with high schools, we are helping empower the next generation of civic leaders and strengthening our democratic institutions.

Thank you to Senator Robert Peters, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. Voter engagement leader Dr. Roberts, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Chicago Votes, educators, advocates, students, and the many stakeholders whose dedication helped move this legislation across the finish line.

Now, we look forward to the Governor signing this important bill into law.

“Museums are often viewed simply as destinations or attractions. But they are much more than that. Museums are economic engines, educational partners and community anchors that help drive growth across our state.”

Rep. IL State Representative Kim du Buclet - 5th wrote to the Chicago Sun-Times about the importance of supporting our museums.

Today, I had the honor and privilege of rising to give remarks on the House floor in recognition of Memorial Day, a day of gratitude for all service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

A little-known fact about Memorial Day is the deep involvement of the Black community at its inception. On May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, less than a month after the end of the Civil War and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, a crowd of recently freed Black men and women gathered to honor fallen Union soldiers who fought to help end slavery.

They provided proper burials for the 257 Union soldiers who had been buried in mass graves at a nearby Confederate prison, decorating their final resting places with flowers.

Today and every day, I honor them and all of the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our nation’s ideals, including my father and brother, who served during the Second World War and the Vietnam War, respectively.

Without their sacrifice, we could not enjoy the freedoms we have today.

In the words of Korean War veteran Howard William Osterkamp, “All gave some and some gave all,” and our nation owes them a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid.

On this Memorial Day, let us reflect on and remember the sacrifice of our fallen heroes, the brave men and women who for no selfish reason answered the call of duty.

Today, we honor the brave servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and our freedoms. Memorial Day is a time for reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for those who never made it home and for the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

As we gather with loved ones across our communities, may we also take a moment to remember the true meaning of this day and the courage of those who served with honor. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸
