📍 Carry current maps or nautical charts
📻 Bring a weather radio or another reliable device
🌩️ Monitor changing weather conditions

If you encounter an unexpected storm:

🦺 Ensure everyone is wearing a properly fitted life jacket
⚖️ Have passengers sit low near the centerline
🚤 Reduce speed
🌊 Point the bow into waves at approximately a 45-degree angle
🏄 If operating a personal watercraft, approach waves head-on

These precautions can help improve vessel control and reduce the risk of capsizing.

⚠️Alcohol and Water Are a Deadly Combination⚠️

Mixing alcohol with boating or water activities can have serious—and even fatal—consequences.

When under the influence, a condition called caloric labyrinthitis can cause severe disorientation, making it difficult to tell which way is up if you are underwater.

🛥️ Boaters are also at risk of boater’s hypnosis, a condition caused by prolonged exposure to:
☀️ Sun
💨 Wind
🔊 Noise
🌊 Vibration and motion

This can lead to fatigue and slower reaction times.

Add alcohol to the mix, and coordination, judgment, and reaction time are significantly impaired.

🚤 Stay alert.
💧 Stay sober.
