Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio

Family, community & country are core values. Our volunteer efforts help support the needs of the country and of our local community.

Our club meets the 2nd, and 4th Tuesday of each month at 6 PM, at Wittenberg University, in the Benham-Pence Student Center, 734 Woodlawn Avenue, Springfield, Ohio 45504. Meetings are held in the Alumni Room on the second floor. We sponsor activities designed to benefit, award and develop our community’s youth, promote crime prevention, serve senior citizens and recognize military and public safet

y service providers. We also promote Americanism programs, and our national project is the prevention of child abuse. Throughout our history, we have made an impact on the local organizations we support. The National Exchange Club is a service organization with 600 clubs and more than 18,000 members created to “exchange” ideas on making their community better, the Exchange Club moved its headquarters to Toledo in 1917. For over a hundred years, members' volunteer efforts have supported the needs of the country and of local communities, making it America's oldest service organization. National Day of Service - Saturday, October 25th, 2025 – Tuttle Road cleanup. Twelve hearty members of the Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio braved the chilly temp and met at 9 AM to sweep the grounds clean, collecting 7 bags of litter. Many thanks to Carin, Scott, Jill, Mark S, Karen H. Dave, Karen L., Larry, Skip, Tim, Mark L, and to Chair Andy Kittles. The group then slaked their thirst and assuaged their hunger at the local Frisch’s restaurant. Then perhaps on to fall chores or to the enjoyment of no chores and football! Unity for Service!

The Firefighters Trunk or Treat Event saw twelve members of the Springfield Exchange Club grill and serve 320 hotdogs to over 300 trick or treaters (probably more like 500+...just a guess) at the Firefighters Clubhouse on N. Bird Road. Thanks to Chair Karen Hupp and members Skip Warner, Jill Parker, Tim Parker, Janet Sauter, Dave Sauter, Terry Rust, Joy Dabe, Karen Sullivan, Don Lynam, Mark Sullivan, and Andy Kittles. Special thanks to Jason from the Tigers Exchange Club who performed magic tricks for the amazed children of all ages!

The Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio met Tuesday October 14, 2025, at the Park Shopping Center Branch of the Clark County Public Library, with 15 members and one guest present. Guest Speaker was Annette Turner, CEO of the Masonic Community, Springfield, Ohio. Annette shared her extensive experience at Oakwood Village in Springfield. Annette reported that the local Masonic Community spans some 240 acres, 350+ residents and 250+ staff, and was named “Best of Springfield 2025”. The facility rates in the top 1% of the 2500 in their class. Villas, apartments, long term care, dementia, rehab services and soon will break ground on December 1st on a $65M privately funding expansion. The site was originally an orphanage and then opened to Masons and others effective 1995.

Ten Members and a guest of the Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio took a break and met for an afternoon of food, fellowship, and fun at local parks.

The tour was led by National Trail Parks and Recreation Director Leann Castillo. Starting with a picnic lunch at venerable Snyder Park, the group caravanned to George Rogers Clark Park, touring the grounds via automobile and visiting the Hertzler House, built in the late 1854 by, pioneer and wealthy entrepreneur Daniel Hertzler. Hertzler was a 19th century corporate king and a moneylender who owned a grist mill, sawmill, brick distillery, whiskey distillery and over 1,000 acres of farmland. Hertzler’s wealth and status would ultimately lead to foul play and Mr. Hertzler’s demise.

From there, the members visited the nearby Davidson Interpretive Center and explored the site of the 1780 Battle of Peckuwe, the largest Revolutionary War battle west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Center encourages one to experience the life of a Shawnee warrior, stroll around the grounds of this historic battle, or enjoy a themed program with friends. Located on the grounds of the former Peckuwe Village, a key Shawnee Indian settlement and British ally during the Revolutionary War, the Interpretive Center offers a window into a pivotal moment in American history. This village served as a strategic base for British and Indian raids, drawing the attention of American Colonel George Rogers Clark. Additionally, the area is notable as the birthplace of the renowned Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh, who witnessed the battle as a young boy.

Club members then travelled to the Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve, 91 acres of natural beauty, encompassing a main hiking trail along an old railroad, access to the Mad River, natural dolomite cliffs reaching heights up to 50 feet for rock climbing, and a beautiful stream-side forest teeming with native wildflowers and ideal birdwatching opportunities.

Shuttling next to the Perrin Woods neighborhood we visited Perrin Woods Park and Nature Preserve. A pristine natural encounter waiting to happen. The woods compose nearly 12 acres of undeveloped nature preserve, creating perfectly accessible open space for outdoor get-togethers and fun! On April 6, 2018, a ADA-Accessible Park shelter was dedicated by Zeta Phi Beta, Inc sorority. The shelter and memorial were dedicated in honor of two of their founding members, sisters Myrtle Lavenia Tyler Faithful and Viola Margaret Isabelle Goings who lived in the Perrin Woods neighborhood for many years.

Members then visited Old Reid Park where one may relax along the tranquil ponds and lagoons or take the court with a game of tennis or volleyball. This 60-acre park offers shelter houses, a playground, volleyball courts, nine lighted soft tennis courts, shuffleboard courts, and fishing (no license needed). This park serves as the north trailhead for the Buck Creek Scenic Trail and offers plenty of parking. ADA-Accessible fishing is available and by entry off of the Buck Creek Trail.
The Kirby Preserve at Old Reid Park is now open to the public. This nearly 110-acre preserve was acquired through a Clean Ohio grant. For the past year, crews have been eradicating honeysuckle, developing prairie, meadow and wildflower areas, planting over 600 trees and removing old structures. It features nearly 4 miles of hiking trails, access to Beaver Creek and two catch and release fishing ponds.

The Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio met Tuesday September 23rd, 2025, in the Benham-Pence Alumni Room on the campus of Wittenberg University, with 13 members and two guests present. Our Guest Speakers were Deputies Shaun Lisle and Josh Elliott, CC D.A.R.E. The Clark County Sheriff’s office began this program in 1988. They currently teach in 15 elementary schools and seven high schools with about 1600 kids a year. Our D.A.R.E. Deputies also teach the Safety Village Program in the summer to kids entering kindergarten. The deputies accepted a $500 Exchange Foundation of Springfield, Ohio donation from club President Jill Parker.

The Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio met Tuesday September 9th, 2025, in the Benham-Pence Alumni Room. Our first Guest Speaker was Clara Wiant, Buckeye Girls State Delegate 2025, who related her experiences at the Buckeye Girls State week at BGSU. Clara stated she learned more than she could ever need to know about the working of local government elections and parliamentary procedures. Clara is interested in corporate law, so here’s hoping she will stick with it and be very successful someday.
Since September is Baby Safety Month, our second Guest Speaker was Lori Lambert, Clark County Health Dept., who related many statistics and great information about safe sleep procedures for infants. She explained the difference between SUID (Sudden Unexplained Infant Death), and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). SUID is preventable while SIDS is not, as a SIDS death is unexplainable even after an autopsy. To reduce the risk of SUID, follow these safe sleep recommendations:
• Place your baby on their back to sleep.
• Use a firm, flat crib mattress with a fitted sheet.
• Remove all loose bedding, pillows, and toys from the crib.
• Keep the room temperature comfortable (68-72 degrees F).
• Do not smoke during pregnancy or around your baby.
• Breastfeed your baby if possible.
About three quarters of infant deaths occur in the adult’s bed, so the infant should always sleep alone. It was a very interesting and important presentation!

The Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio delivered 12 additional baby layette baskets to the 178th Wing on Friday. This is a program that was started by the Airman & Family Readiness Program at the local Air National Guard Base. The Exchange Club accepted responsibility for the project nine years ago. The Exchange Club Foundation Springfield, Ohio provides the funds to create the baskets. The purpose is to provide a baby layette basket to expecting local Air National Guard service members and or their spouse, for new infants up to 2 months of age. The baskets include a baby poem, “Children Learn What They Live”, which are printed and framed and placed in the baskets to complement the National Exchange Club’s Prevention of Child Abuse Project. To date the club has provided hundreds of baby baskets and will continue to provide them as long as they are needed. The items include things such as: Baby Bottles, Onesies, Bottle Brushes, Bath Toys, Pacifiers, Bibs, Rattles, Baby Wipes, Baby Powder, Baby Shampoo, Baby Spoons, Wash Cloths, Snack Containers, Safety Plugs, Stuffed Toys, Baby Lotion, Socks, Small Books , Baby Comb & Brush and other assorted useful items. Many thanks to Peg, Bev, Karen S., and Karen L for assembly this time around.

Members of the Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio staffed the Information Booth at a fundraiser car show. Chair Skip reports that all went well on a beautiful day. There were over 60 cars, and it was well attended by generous donors helping to fund Clark County Partners in Prevention as they work diligently to reduce drug, alcohol, and to***co use among our youth! Many thanks to Exchange Members Joy Dabe, Karen Hupp, Carin Little, Don Lynam Jill Parker, Tim Parker, and Skip Warner for staffing the Information Booth!

Our Story

Throughout our club’s 98 year history, (we were chartered in Springfield on December 15, 1921,) we have made an impact on the local organizations we support.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit by business leaders who wanted to “exchange” ideas on making their community better, the Exchange Club moved its headquarters to Toledo in 1917.
