This year marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001, and we invite the Springfield community to join us as we come together to remember and honor those who lost their lives that day.

On the morning of September 11, we encourage you to visit your neighborhood Springfield fire station and stand alongside our firefighters, City staff, police officers, and fellow community members for a brief remembrance and moment of silence.

You do not need to travel across town or attend a large ceremony. Join us in your own neighborhood, at your local fire station, as our community pauses together. Bring your family, your children, your neighbors, or simply come on your own. We want everyone who would like to take part to feel welcome.

Please arrive by 7:30 a.m. Brief remarks will begin at 7:45 a.m., followed by a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center 25 years ago.

Twenty five years later, we remember those we lost, honor those who answered the call, and make sure a new generation understands why we will never forget.

We hope you will join us on September 11.

The traffic lights at N Dirksen Parkway and Atlanta Street are currently out due to a motor vehicle crash. Repairs will take several hours. Motorists should plan for alternative routes to avoid delays or otherwise treat this intersection as a four-way stop. City of Springfield-Municipal Government

NORTHBOUND 11TH STREET TO DETOUR AT SOUTH GRAND AVENUE FOR WATER WORK

On Tuesday, September 1, northbound 11th Street will detour at S. Grand Avenue while Water Department crews abandon a leaking water line in the 1300 block. Lanes will remain closed until road surface repairs are complete.

Motorists should plan to take alternative routes to avoid delays and should slow down and drive with caution around this work zone.

Attention Springfield!

A very hot week is ahead, with temperatures reaching their peak during the afternoon hours. Heat index values are expected to range from 100–105 degrees today through Thursday.

Please take precautions to stay safe in the heat:

~Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
~Limit strenuous outdoor activities, especially during the afternoon.
~Check on family, friends and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
~Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.

Please be mindful of the heat and take care of yourself and those around you.

8/28 6:45 a.m.-The break is approximately 12feet long, and the main is located deep underground. We are working to secure a larger excavator from a contractor to assist with the repair.

The crews that worked overnight have been sent home and are being relieved by a new group that arrived at 6:00 a.m.

At this time, we still do not have an estimated completion time. Based on what we’re seeing, it appears we will need to replace approximately 20 feet of 24-inch pipe.

The City is sending building and electrical inspectors to area businesses to assist with assessment for safety and restoration efforts, as power remains off to 51 in the area. Customers impacted by the power outage include those on the south side of Monroe Street to the north side of Capitol Avenue and along 3rd, 4th, and 5th Streets on the same block.

We’ll continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

As of 10:20 p.m., Monroe Street is closed between 4th and 5th Streets due to a 24-inch water main break that has caused significant damage to the roadway.

City crews will remain on site throughout the night, working to access the water main, assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary repairs. Monroe Street will remain closed between 4th and 5th Streets until further notice.

Due to fire safety concerns, buildings and businesses on the south side of Monroe Street between 4th and 5th Streets are currently without power.

If you need to access a building or business in this area, you will need to do so on foot. Please check directly with the business or building to confirm whether it is open before arriving.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and use an alternate route. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

UPDATE FRIDAY 1:30 PM-BRIEF POWER OUTAGE PLANNED
Power is going to be restored to the majority of the 51 customers in a power outage from Monroe to Capitol between 3rd and 5th Streets this afternoon, excluding the damaged businesses on the south side of Monroe.

To accommodate this repair around 2 pm this afternoon there will be a brief power outage, lasting no more than 5 minutes. Locations impacted include along Capitol Avenue between 2nd and 4th Streets, excluding the Capitol Complex. Traffic lights will go dark on Capitol from 2nd to 4th Streets. Motorists should treat those intersections as stop signs and drive with caution.

UPDATE 10:20 PM: The downtown power outage has been isolated down to 51 customers located from the south side of Monroe between 3rd and 4th St approximately.

UPDATE 8:30PM: For repairs to the Koke Mill area, we are going to have a power outage for about 20 minutes in a larger surrounding area while a switch is replaced.

UPDATE 8PM: Crews are also responding to a power outage in the Koke Mill area impacting 68 customers from Old Jacksonville Rd to Mill Point Ct. from Devonwood to Wood Mill Dr.

FROM EARLIER: Due to a 24-inch water main break downtown, power was cut for safety, impacting customers on the south side of Monroe to Cook Streets between 3rd and Fifth Streets. Follow our water main break post for more details on that.
