Today, we recognize Juneteenth Independence Day!
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

It is a day to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate freedom, and recognize the enduring contributions of African Americans to our communities, culture, and civic life.

Mayor Sean VanGordon - Springfield, OR has proclaimed June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth Independence Day in Springfield.

In observance of the holiday, City of Springfield offices are closed today. Regular business hours will resume Monday, June 22.

📣Calling all 5TH GRADE TEACHERS: Save the Date for Clean Water University this fall!

We're offering our Clean Water University field trip this October to all 5th (or 4th/5th) grade classes in the Springfield, Eugene 4J, and Bethel school districts, and will fill slots using a lottery system at the beginning of the school year.

Clean Water University includes a tour of the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission's regional wastewater treatment plant in Eugene, as well as hands-on STEM activities, learning about wastewater, stormwater, and drinking water. It is FREE for teachers to attend!

This program is delivered jointly by the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission, the City of Springfield, and the City of Eugene, with support from Springfield Utility Board, EWEB, and other local agencies who work to protect our water resources. 💧

🔥 Fire season has officially arrived in Oregon.

With warmer, drier conditions already impacting our region, now is the time to take steps to help prevent wildfires.

A few important reminders:
• Outdoor burning is prohibited in Eugene and Springfield
• Never discard ci******es on the ground
• Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass
• Follow local fire restrictions when recreating outdoors

Wildfire prevention starts with all of us. Thank you for doing your part to help protect our community, firefighters, and natural areas.

Springfield's landscaped areas require care year-round, and with summer just around the corner, our Operations Division crews are busy keeping them looking their best. 🌿☀️

Our public works technicians and seasonal staff are hard at work maintaining roundabouts, medians, rights-of-way, bioswales, and other landscaped stormwater areas throughout Springfield. You'll also see our team mowing City properties and larger grassy areas at some Willamalane Park and Recreation District parks as part of our ongoing Team Springfield partnership.

Maintaining these spaces does more than improve curb appeal. Keeping vegetation trimmed improves visibility for people driving, walking, and biking, enhances safety at intersections and along roadways, and helps create welcoming public spaces our community can enjoy all season long.

Thank you to everyone working behind the scenes to help Springfield shine all summer long.

Join the Springfield Police Department - Oregon on Saturday, June 20, for their annual K9 Competition. This family-friendly event offers a chance to see the skills, training, and teamwork that help keep our community safe.

Admission is free, and attendees can enjoy demonstrations, concessions, and opportunities to learn more about Springfield's K9 unit.

Join the Springfield Public Library on Wednesday as Summer Reading 2026: Plant a Seed, Read kicks off with Rhythms of Tahiti: An 'Ori Tahiti Cultural Presentation.

This free event will feature traditional Tahitian dance, music, storytelling, and an opportunity to learn about Polynesian culture through an engaging cultural presentation.

☀️ Hot temperatures are expected across our region beginning this weekend and continuing into early next week.

Now is a good time to prepare. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and make a plan to stay cool if temperatures rise.

If you plan to spend time outdoors or on the water, remember that rivers and lakes remain cold even during hot weather. Wear a life jacket and use caution around moving water.

Please take a few minutes to prepare now and check in on family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

⚾ A week later, we're still smiling about Springfield Night at the Drifters!

More than a baseball game, the evening was an opportunity to celebrate the partnerships, public service, and community spirit that make Springfield special. It was wonderful to see residents, families, elected officials, staff, and community partners all coming together for a fun summer evening.

Thank you to the Springfield Drifters Baseball Club and our Team Springfield partners for helping create such a memorable event. We are already looking forward to next year.

Our public works technicians have been out crack-sealing neighborhood streets in the Douglas Gardens area to help protect and preserve Springfield's street system. Crews apply liquid rubberized asphalt to fill cracks and seal the pavement surface, preventing water from reaching the layers below. Keeping water out helps reduce pavement damage, slows the formation of potholes, and extends the life of our streets.

Preventive maintenance like crack sealing is one of the most cost-effective ways to keep our transportation system in good condition for years to come.

If you notice a street in need of repair, please contact the Operations Division of Development and Public Works at 541-726-3761 so staff can review the concern, track the request, and route it to the appropriate team.
