🎉 JTEC Turns 50!

John Twitty Energy Center (JTEC) is celebrating 50 years of powering our community!

For 5 decades, JTEC has kept the lights on in Springfield. Today, City Utilities makes electricity at JTEC using coal-fired units and combustion turbines to help generate electricity and support reliable service every day. JTEC can produce up to 607 megawatts of power for our community.

We’re proud of the role JTEC has played for the past 50 years—and we’re also looking ahead and continuing to invest in a reliable, resilient energy future.

You may notice a change in your sewer charges beginning with your August bill.

While sewer charges appear on your City Utilities bill, CU does not operate the sewer system or set sewer rates. Those services and rates are managed by the City of Springfield.

CU includes sewer, water, electric and natural gas charges on one monthly bill to make paying for your utilities easier and help customers avoid additional processing fees.

Customers on City sewer service will see an approximate 4% rate increase beginning July 1 – an increase that adds up to an additional $1.67 per month on a typical residential sewer bill.

The increase in rates will facilitate the continued improvement of the City’s aging sewer system and allow the community to remain in compliance with federal Clean Water Act regulations. The City of Springfield contracts with City Utilities for sanitary sewer services billing, so customers will notice this change on their August CU bills.

City Utilities' 2025 Water Quality Report is now available.

Providing safe drinking water isn't just part of what we do—it's essential to keeping our community healthy. That's why our team works every day to test, monitor and protect the water that flows from the source to your tap. For the 26th year in a row, City Utilities' has earned the Directors Award from the Partnership for Safe Water, a program of the American Water Works Association. Fewer than one percent of water treatment plants in the United States have received this recognition. This award recognizes our commitment to providing water quality that goes above and beyond federal requirements.

Today is Automotive Service Professionals Day, and we're recognizing the team that helps keep City Utilities moving.

From bucket trucks and line vehicles to service trucks, buses and everything in between, our fleet professionals work behind the scenes to inspect, maintain and repair hundreds of vehicles and pieces of equipment.

Their skill and dedication help ensure our crews have the tools they need to safely provide electric, natural gas, water, transit and internet services to our community every day.

Keeping the power on takes a lot of work behind the scenes.

In this video, our team is welding on a boiler at the John Twitty Energy Center. While repairing a leak, crews found some boiler tubes that had become worn and thinner over time.

By adding layers of weld to strengthen the tubes, we're making them safe to use again and helping the boiler last longer. It's one of the many ways our employees work every day to provide reliable service for our community.

Healthy lakes help create high-quality drinking water. 💧🌿

City Utilities has partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation again this year to improve water quality at McDaniel and Fellows lakes.

Using Community Cost-Share funds, we added 96 square feet of floating wetland plants and new plants along the shoreline. These plants help remove nutrients from the water that can feed algae growth during the summer.

Less algae means fewer taste and odor issues, less treatment and better source water for our community.
