We proudly recognize and thank Board President Matthew Hunt for seven years of distinguished service on the TRS Board of Trustees.

Since joining the board in 2019, Hunt has played a central role in the long-term strategic direction of TRS. As board president, he provided steady leadership during a period of significant organizational transformation, helping advance initiatives that enhanced governance practices, strengthened organizational capabilities and reinforced the board’s fiduciary responsibilities to members and beneficiaries.

Through his committee leadership, including as chair of the Investment Committee and leadership roles supporting the Deferred Compensation Plan Committee and other standing committees, Hunt championed fiduciary stewardship, accountability and operational excellence. Widely respected for bringing people together around a shared purpose, he fostered strong collaboration between trustees and employees and advanced TRS’s growth.

Matthew, thank you for being a powerful advocate for educators across Illinois. We are grateful for your leadership, service and your lasting impact.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of former TRS Trustee Robert “Bob” Lyons earlier this month. A longtime high school social science teacher and department chair, Bob dedicated his career to serving students and supporting education in Illinois. He spent more than three decades shaping young minds and strengthening school communities.

Bob served on the TRS Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2016, advising the System’s investment strategy as chair of the Investment Committee. He was passionate about ensuring transparency and accountability on behalf of Illinois educators and traveled often to visit retired members throughout northern Illinois.

“We extend our condolences to Bob’s family and friends as they mourn his passing, and the generations of students he impacted in the classroom and as a coach,” said Stan Rupnik, TRS executive director. “We honor his legacy, impact and remarkable service to Illinois education.”

As Teacher Appreciation Week comes to a close, we’re proud to celebrate Seth Brady, the 2026 Illinois Teacher of the Year!

A veteran social studies educator at Naperville Central High School, Mr. Brady is dedicated to empowering students with the knowledge to understand complex global and local issues and to take informed action that strengthens their communities. Alongside teaching, Mr. Brady serves as the project director of the Illinois Global Scholar program, a statewide initiative he helped implement through legislation to expand global education opportunities for students.

During this year's Teacher Appreciation Week, we recognize the public educators who show up every day for students across Illinois.

From early mornings to late nights, teachers dedicate their time, energy and care to helping students learn, grow and succeed. Their impact is immeasurable and reaches far beyond the classroom as it lives through generations.

TRS is proud to serve the public educators who strengthen schools, communities and the future of our state. As you help prepare and nurture students for success on their academic journey, we are here to help you prepare for your retirement journey — every step of the way.

Thank you, teachers — today and always. Tag a teacher who made a difference in your life.
