If you get a request on Venmo to send a "donation" to ERC, DO NOT SEND IT THROUGH THAT REQUEST!! THAT IS A SCAMMER TRYING TO SCAM YOU OUT OF MONEY AND IT IS NOT COMING FROM ERC! If you do pay the amount the scammer is requesting, it will go to them and not be a donation to us.

Please know we would never contact individuals and ask directly for any amount of money to be sent as a donation like this, ever!

Someone just got a request from a Venmo account that looks identical to our actual Venmo account. (See the first screenshot in comments!). The request was for a $50 "donation" with the option to pay or decline. Trying to earn anyone else that may get a similar request so they know it did not come from us!!

If donating in the future, please be sure you are donating to an actual charity by double checking that the profile has the little blue verification badge that is only shown on LEGITIMATE charity profiles. (See the second screenshot with the little blue badge on our profile circled in the comments!)

Note, this scammer is using a capital letter "I" rather than the "L" in the word "Consultancy" I only saw that because the person that it was sent to has a font that is different than most phones and you could clearly see the capital "I". but on most phones it will not look any different!!!

I think it's finally time I officially introduce someone who has quietly become a pretty important part of ERC over the last year. 💜

Meet Sue Harris! My friend, fellow trapper, and now ***officially*** a part of Emergency Rescue Consultancy.

Sue and I worked our first case together in July 2025, when we worked to recover Thistle, a Great Dane who was lost and covering a huge area in and around Mountain Grove. Since then, we've worked 15 cases together, most recently just last night in Carthage, where we caught a mama Boxer and all four of her puppies.

There is so much more to this work than learning how to set a trap. That part is the easy part to learn (and teach). But understanding the fundamentals of why we do what we do, learning to read a dog and a situation, understanding how not to apply pressure to a dog on the run, and knowing when to act, and more importantly, when not to, takes time and experience.

That's one of the things I've appreciated most about Sue from the beginning. She listened. She asked questions. She watched. She learned. She never came into this assuming that a handful of successful experiences meant there was nothing left to learn. She wanted to understand why we do things the way we do, not just how to do them.

I've had the privilege of watching that turn into experience and confidence of her own in this work. She's worked cases independently and has now also successfully completed a capture entirely on her own using an ERC-style, custom-modified Missy trap that she constructed herself. And she didn't exactly pick an easy one for her first solo capture. This was an extremely trap-shy, very smart Shiba Inu. Anyone who has dealt with this breed knows they aren't typically the easiest dogs to trap, and this particular one was no exception. IYKYK. 😂

She's still learning. We both are. Those who do this work know and embrace the fact that everything we think we know about dogs can change with the very next case...and usually does. Sue loves learning and loves the challenge of figuring these dogs out as much as I do.

I trust her judgment. And equally important, I trust that the safety of the dog will always matter more to her than proving she can catch one.

And somewhere in the middle of all those long drives, late nights, cameras, traps and dogs, she's also become a very good friend. We laugh ** A LOT ** our quirky personalities mesh remarkably well, and somehow it just works. Even on some of the longest and most frustrating days or nights, we still manage to have fun together.

Anyone who has followed ERC through the years knows that Richard Morrison taught me this work. He trusted me enough to teach me not only how he did things, but why. Years ago, when Richard introduced me to this community, he put into words a level of confidence in me that I don't think he ever fully understood the impact of; a confidence I didn't fully have in myself yet.

But I understand the weight of his words a little clearer now.

So it seems only fitting that I end this introduction the same way he ended mine:

🎆 Firework Season Is Here... Backyards Are Not Escape-Proof.

One of the most common things we hear after a dog goes missing is:

"We thought they would be okay in the backyard."

Unfortunately, fireworks can trigger a powerful survival response. When that happens, dogs aren't thinking the way they normally do.

•A dog that has never climbed a fence may suddenly jump one.
•A dog that has never dug before may dig.
•A dog that has ignored a loose board for years may discover it in seconds.

When fear takes over, their only goal is to get away from what they believe is dangerous.

That's why we recommend bringing dogs inside before fireworks begin and taking them out only on a leash for potty breaks, **even** if you have a securely fenced yard.

THE SAFEST PLACE FOR YOUR DOG DURING FIREWORKS IS INSIDE YOUR HOME WITH YOU.

A fence is an excellent everyday safety tool.
It just wasn't designed to contain a dog that's panicking.

🎆 Firework Season Is Here... The Open Door Problem

It usually doesn't happen because someone wasn't paying attention. It happens because life is happening:

•Someone arrives at the front door.
•A guest leaves.
•Kids run outside to watch the fireworks.
•Someone carries food to the grill.
•A package is delivered.
•The trash needs to go out.
•The dog hears a loud boom...
..and in the few seconds the door is open, they're gone.

Unfortunately, a second is often all it takes.

If your dog is inside during fireworks season, try to think ahead before opening any exterior door.
🐾 Put your dog in another room before guests arrive.
🐾 Use a leash to take them outside, even in a fenced yard.
🐾 Ask family members and guests to be extra mindful when coming and going.
🐾 If you're hosting a party, assign one person to be responsible for the dog throughout the evening.
These simple steps can prevent a heartbreaking situation before it ever begins.

💜 Our goal isn't just to recover lost dogs. It's to help keep them from becoming lost in the first place.

🎆 Firework Season Is Here... Know Which Dogs Are Most at Risk.

If your first thought was...

"My dog isn't afraid of fireworks."..we hope you're right.

But after helping recover lost dogs, we've learned something important:

Many of the dogs that go missing during fireworks season had never run away before.

While some dogs have a long history of being afraid of fireworks, others are startled by a loud explosion, become overwhelmed, and instinctively run.

Some dogs are at an even higher risk, including:
🐾 Newly adopted dogs
🐾 Foster dogs
🐾 Dogs staying with family or friends
🐾 Dogs visiting for holiday gatherings
🐾 Puppies experiencing their first fireworks season
🐾 Senior dogs that may become confused
🐾 Dogs with a history of noise sensitivity

But the truth is...
**Any** dog can panic if they're frightened enough.
That's why we encourage **everyone**, not just owners of dogs with known firework anxiety, to take extra precautions this week.

The safest Fourth of July is the one where your dog never gets the chance to run.

🎆 Firework Season Is Here... Let's Talk About Lost Dogs.

Every Fourth of July season, we hear the same heartbreaking words from dog owners:

"He's never done anything like this before."

And they're usually right.

For most people, the Fourth of July means celebrating with family, friends, and fireworks.

For us at Emergency Rescue Consultancy, it means preparing for one of the busiest times of the year.

The truth is, fireworks can trigger a powerful survival response. Even a well-trained, well-loved dog may panic, slip through an open door, back out of a collar, jump a fence, or bolt into the night.

It doesn't happen because they're bad dogs.

It doesn't happen because their owners don't love them.

It happens because fear can override everything they've ever known.

The good news is that many Fourth of July escapes are preventable.

That's why, over the next several days, we'll be sharing practical tips based on what we've learned from recovering lost dogs. Our hope is simple: to help keep more dogs safe at home—and spare more families the heartbreak of searching for a beloved pet.

Unfortunately, despite every precaution, some dogs will still become lost. When they do, ERC will be ready to respond with the specialized equipment, training, and countless hours needed to help bring them home safely.

As a nonprofit, we rely entirely on donations to make that possible. Fuel, humane traps, trail cameras, batteries, dog food, and travel expenses are all made possible by people who believe every frightened dog deserves a safe way home.

We were contacted by the Justice For Snoop folks about 3 dogs needing to be trapped after their owners moved out of the house and didnt bother to take them with them, let alone untie them from the trees they were tied to initially. They chewed through those ties and had been living on trash that the owners had literally everywhere on the property until the property owner was notified and reached out for help. The Joplin Humane Society Animal Adoption & Resource Center will be taking these dogs in once caught (thank you!).

With there being 3 dogs, those of you who follow our work know that it takes time and patience and a lot of monitoring their eating habits to understand who should be trapped first or if we can get them eating so that all are trapped together.

All pretty standard stuff for a case with multiple dogs needing to be trapped, being in a bad service area, our cameras do not work there, which means the only way I've been able to monitor is via being there, in person and watching, for hours at a time so they get comfortable with me being there and actually coming out to eat. But I've finally gotten enough data on their feeding habits to make a solid plan and I will be setting the trap tonight for them. The plan is to trap the smallest one first, and then the other 2 together, most likely on another day.

With spending multiple days and nights out to monitor, gas prices soaring right now, and with more than one dog needing caught, this case is draining the ERC account quickly, and the trap isn't even set yet. (And it's not the only case I'm working currently either).

We rely on donations to be able to keep helping owners for free. Our case load is constant, our donations coming in are not. Please read and share this with any lost and found groups you’re in. This is important.

I’m addressing something that continues to come up, because it is costing dogs valuable time.

There is a repeated pattern happening right now: a specific individual/group will tell lost dog owners they are coming to help track their dog, stay in communication for a period of time, and promise to show, but never follow through. This often includes multiple delays, cancellations, or extended silence during communication.

In many situations, money (donations) and/or expenses have been discussed before any in-person help ever happens.

This is not about opinions or methods. It’s about reliability and follow-through in time-sensitive situations.

IF YOU HAVE A LOST DOG:
Please be cautious about who you rely on for help.

Do not pause your efforts waiting on anyone unless there is a confirmed, reliable plan and they actually show up.

These things need to be done immediately, do not wait. Continue focusing on:
•Spreading the word to get sightings
• Keeping the dog in one area by keeping it consistent. (Consistency happens when food/water are being provided .)
• Reducing pressure so the dog doesn’t keep moving. (Let them feel invisible to you and others so they will feel safe)
• Be cautious about sending/donating money to someone's personal account.

IF YOU ARE OFFERING HELP:
Only commit if you can and will follow through. If plans change, communicate immediately so the owner can pivot.

This pattern has now happened enough times that it needs to be addressed so it doesn’t continue costing dogs time they cannot get back.

Please protect your time, your resources, and your dog.
