Today we pause to remember the following members who each suffered and died as a result of a fire and multiple explosions that occurred at the Sun Oil Company in Marcus Hook Borough on this date, October 3rd, back in 1946.

Nick Barnett - Marcus Hook Borough Fire Chief, Transported to the Hospital with serious injuries and burns, died several hours later.

Glen Jones, 32 - Plant Operator and Deputy Chief of the Linwood Fire Company. Died on scene.

Vincent Keelan, 39 - Firefighter. Died on scene.

William Ward, 20 - Firefighter, Linwood Fire Company. Died on scene.

More than 200 people were injured and or killed as a result of this incident. Many of those injured were firefighters from surrounding departments, some even died days later.

During the incident, an announcement was made at the Pennsylvania State Fireman's Convention, for all of Delaware County's Firemen to return to help battle the incident. Reports indicate that the PA State Police conducted a caravan to es**rt the attendees back to DelCo ASAP.

Poor records of the day have made it hard for us to confirm additional Fire & EMS Service Line of Duty Death's but we continue to research.

Public announcement from Delaware County Council - 9/11 Memorial Service

Delaware County’s annual September 11th Day of Remembrance Ceremony, hosted by Delaware County Council and the District Attorney’s Office, will take place on Wednesday, September 11, at 11:30 a.m. at Rose Tree Park. The ceremony will be held in the rear section of the park, at the memorial site dedicated to law enforcement, fire, EMS, and 911 personnel who have sacrificed their lives in service.

This year, we will once again come together at the 911 Memorial in Rose Tree Park to reflect on and remember the heroes who perished as a result of the devastating attacks on September 11th. We will also honor Delaware County’s brave First Responders who have died in the line of duty, while also expressing our gratitude to those who continue to protect and serve our community every day.

We would be honored for members of the first responder community to attend.
