This week, our team is heading to the National Association of Regional Councils (NARC) Annual Conference, and we're not just attending; we're presenting.

Tim Reavis will be sharing our Forward 2050 regional vision with communities across the country that are tackling many of the same challenges we are: growth, transportation, housing, infrastructure, and long-term planning.

As Northwest Arkansas continues to grow, it's important that we keep learning from other regions, sharing ideas, and bringing back strategies that help our communities stay connected, safe, and prepared for the future.

Conferences like this give us the opportunity to collaborate with experts and regional leaders working on real-world solutions and help us continue doing the work that supports the quality of life people value here in NWA.

Fayetteville is turning safety plans into action.

The City Council unanimously voted this week to adopt both the Fayetteville Vision Zero Safety Action Plan and the Safe Routes to School Plan, marking major commitments to making Northwest Arkansas' streets safer for everyone.

By joining the growing Vision Zero movement, Fayetteville is transforming regional planning into meaningful local action—creating safer streets for residents, visitors, students, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike, no matter how they choose to get around. As a funding partner for both plans, NWARPC is proud to support these milestones for Fayetteville and other participating cities in NWA!

$15.8 million in federal transportation funding has been awarded to Northwest Arkansas.

Today, NWARPC announced FFY 2027 funding across three federal programs supporting road, trail, sidewalk, and pedestrian safety projects throughout the region. Projects were selected through a competitive review process, with a committee touring and scoring submissions before finalizing recommendations.

From roadway improvements in Bentonville and Lowell to trail connections near NWACC and pedestrian safety upgrades in Rogers, these investments reflect the continued growth of Northwest Arkansas and the regional commitment to keeping communities connected and moving safely.

This is what 60 years of regional planning looks like in action.

Did you know that NWA is one of the fastest-growing regions in America? By 2050, our region is expected to be home to over 1 million people. But someone has to plan for that. The Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission is meeting this growth head-on by:

✅ Creating a safe, connected, and resilient future.
✅ Expanding transportation choices.
✅ Outlining infrastructure for responsible growth.

Serving as the region’s council of governments and metropolitan planning organization since 1966, we are dedicated to strategic planning for our shared future.

Before the vision of the Razorback Greenway, there were just separate paved trails across Northwest Arkansas. Today, they are a part of a 40-mile paved trail corridor connecting seven communities from Fayetteville to Bella Vista.

It took decades of planning, funding, and collaboration between cities, regional partners, and community leaders to bring this vision to life. What started as a long-range idea became a unified system linking downtowns, schools, parks, and major destinations across the region.

Now, 10 years later, the Greenway stands as the backbone of Northwest Arkansas, proving what’s possible when communities work together toward a shared goal.

And we’re still building on that vision every day.

What does the future of transportation in NWA look like?

It looks like Forward2050, the plan guiding how Northwest Arkansas will move, grow, and stay connected over the next 25 years.

This plan looks at everything from roads, trails, transit, and future growth to help make sure our transportation system keeps up with the region.

Built with input from communities across NWA, Forward2050 focuses on:

✔️ Safer more accessible travel for all residents
✔️ Maintaining what we already have
✔️ Smart, strategic investments to keep up with and allow for continued growth

Because planning ahead today means a better, more connected region tomorrow. Follow along for more important Forward2050 updates and milestones!

It was a week of big ideas about the future of growing regions like ours. At the Congress for the New Urbanism conference we joined important conversations around housing, transportation, and walkability to regional collaboration and connectivity. The ideas shared this week reinforced the importance of planning ahead—not playing catch-up.

It was also a chance to showcase the important work happening right here in Northwest Arkansas, from the Razorback Greenway to our regional approach to planning, and to learn how those efforts compare to communities across the country.

We’re bringing these insights home as we continue planning for what’s next in NWA.

A recurring theme at the Congress for the New Urbanism Conference: communities everywhere are growing fast and it’s not always easy to keep up.

That’s something we’re thinking about here in Northwest Arkansas, too. Growth brings opportunity, but it also means planning ahead so our roads, trails, and communities continue to work for everyone.

We are proud to continue driving the region toward a connected, livable, and ready for the future.
